הפקולטה לביולוגיה מצטרפת לברכות ומברכת את פרופ' עמנואל שרפנטייה ופרופ' ג'ניפר דאודנה, על זכייתן בפרס נובל בכימיה לשנת 2020
השתיים קיבלו את "פרס הארווי" מטעם הטכניון לפני פחות משנה, ב-3 בנובמבר 2019.
(פרס הארווי, שנוסד בשנת 1971 על ידי ליאו הארווי מלוס אנג'לס, ניתן בכל שנה בטכניון על הישגים יוצאי דופן במדע, בטכנולוגיה ובבריאות האדם ועל תרומות יוצאות מן הכלל לשלום במזרח התיכון, לחברה ולכלכלה.
במרוצת השנים, נחשב לפרס מנבא נובל ויותר מרבע מזוכי הפרס קיבלו לימים את פרס נובל.)

השתיים, שקיבלו את "פרס הארווי" יחד עם פרופ' פנג ז'אנג, יקבלו בדצמבר הקרוב את פרס נובל בכימיה על "פענוח קוד החיים" ועל פיתוח CRISPR-Cas9, טכנולוגיה מהפכנית לעריכה גנטית. טכנולוגיה זו מאפשרת לערוך, לתקן ולשכתב את הדי-אן-איי.
פרופ' עמנואל שרפנטייה היא ראש מכון מקס פלאנק למדע הפתוגנים ופרופ' ג'ניפר דאודנה היא חברת סגל באוניברסיטת קליפורניה ברקלי.
ב-2012 פרסמו השתיים בכתב העת Science את מאמרן ההיסטורי, המציג את האופן שבו מנגנון CRISPR בחיידקים, מזהה יעדים בדי-אן-איי. באותו מאמר הן הדגימו את האפשרות לתכנת את Cas9 בקלות כדי לערוך יעדים רבים ומגוונים בדי-אן-איי.
תגליתן הובילה ליצירתו של תחום חדש במחקר ובפיתוח, חוללה מהפכה בתחום מדעי החיים, תגליות שצפויות להוביל לפיתוח טיפולים חדשניים במחלות ובהזדקנות.

חוקרים בהובלת ד"ר נעמה גבע-זטורסקי מ הפקולטה לרפואה ע"ש רות וברוך רפפורט בטכניון מפתחים בדיקת PCR ביתית לזיהוי הנגיף, ללא מכשור ובאמצעות מים חמים. הערכה תאפשר לכל אדם לבדוק אם נדבק בקורונה, וזאת בתהליך פשוט ומהיר ללא שימוש בחומרים מסוכנים. בשל פשטותה ומהירותה תתאים ערכת הבדיקה לשימוש ביתי ולאבחון מהיר במקומות עבודה. בפיתוח ערכת האבחון החדשנית שותפות ראש המעבדה לווירולוגיה ברמב"ם ד"ר מורן שוורצוורט-כהן ומנהלת היחידה למחלות זיהומיות ברמב"ם פרופ' מיכל פאול.

Spatial-fluxomics provides a subcellular-compartmentalized view of reductive glutamine metabolism in cancer cells Measuring metabolic fluxes in cellular compartments is a challenge. Here, the authors introduce an approach to infer fluxes in mitochondria and cytosol, and find that IDH1 is the major producer of cytosolic citrate in HeLa cells and that in SDH- deficient cells citrate synthase functions in reverse.

Modern microscopy can produce images of biological specimen at very high (super) resolution by precisely determining the positions of numerous blinking light emitting molecules over time. To achieve fast acquisition time, a high density of molecules is required, which poses a significant challenge in terms of image processing. Existing approaches use elaborate algorithms with many parameters that require tuning and a long computation time. New research conducted at the Technion, led by Assistant Prof. Yoav Shechtman (Biomedical Engineering) of the Lokey Interdisciplinary center in collaboration with Assistant Prof. Tomer Michaeli (Electrical Engineering), yielded a method for super-resolution microscopy that utilizes deep-learning: by feeding the computer images of dense molecules along with their correct positions, it is trained to automatically produce super-resolution images from blinking data. The method produces state-of-the-art super-resolution images, and is extremely fast and parameter free.
