Most people would love a magic pill that takes away anxiety but I'm here to tell you that you really really don't want to do that. 🙅🏽‍♀️

Believe it or not anxiety functions to keep us safe and may actually be a helpful feeling in the current situation.

One of the main questions I get asked by the mums I see: is it bad to take a nap? Does it mean I am depressed?

Of course there is no quick answer to this but as a rule of thumb I ask, "well, how do you feel afterwards?"

If the client says "just as bad" or "worse" then we know the nap is a form of avoidance and avoidance just perpetuates the problem. But if the response is "better, recharged, more able to function" then this behaviour may in fact be helpful. 💪

Being a mum is one of the toughest jobs in the world. Sometimes it's hard to know if the things we do and the ways we behave help us or harm us. Sleeping, socialising, exercising for example, there is no one size fits all.

So here's my trick. If you're ever unsure just check in with how you feel afterwards. Better? Worse? The same? Let this guide you to figure out what you actually need and simply go from there.

One of the most common things I find in therapy is that the voice of the self critic is strong. This is true for every client no matter their challenge but is especially true for new mums.
