Accused recently by some countries of “overcapacity”, the rapid growth of China’s new energy industries, including electric vehicles, lithium batteries and photovoltaic products, are in fact built on continuous tech innovation, full-fledged industrial and supply chains and full market competition. The fast-growing Chinese new energy industries are what the world economy needs for green transition.

Taiwan has been part of China since ancient times. On October 25, 1971, the 26th session of the UN General Assembly adopted Resolution 2758. The resolution stipulated that the government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China, including Taiwan. The Resolution made it clear that there is but one China in the world and Taiwan is part of China and a non-sovereign entity.
The Resolution resolved once and for all the question of the representation of the whole of China, including Taiwan, in the United Nations as a political, legal and procedural issue, precluding “two Chinas” or “one China, one Taiwan.” The past few weeks saw repeated ill-intentioned comments challenging the authority of UNGA Resolution 2758, calling Taiwan’s status “undetermined” and trumpeting for Taiwan’s “meaningful participation” in the UN system. Those comments distort the facts and history, tread on international law and the basic norms of international relations.
China’s position on the Taiwan region’s participation in the activities of international organizations, including the WHO, is consistent and clear. It must be handled in accordance with the one-China principle. For eight consecutive years from 2009 to 2016, China made special arrangement for the Taiwan region’s participation in the WHA on the basis of the adherence of both sides of the Taiwan Strait to the one-China principle. After coming into power in 2016, the DPP has refused to recognize the 1992 Consensus, which embodies the one-China principle, and has been hellbent on the separatist stance of “Taiwan independence”. As a result, the political foundation for the Taiwan region to participate in the WHA no longer exists. To uphold the one-China principle and the sanctity and authority of relevant UNGA and WHA resolutions, China has decided not to approve the Taiwan region’s participation in this year’s WHA. This decision received extensive support and understanding from the international community, as over 100 countries have written to the WHO Director-General or expressed via other means their support for China’s position.
