If you have also taken a loan and have not paid it yet, then there is good news for you. Recently, the Supreme Court has ruled that the bank cannot declare the customer a fraud for non-repayment of the loan, nor can it force him to repay the loan.

Digital Desk New Delhi, The Supreme Court said in an important decision that before declaring a borrower's bank account as a fraud, his side should be heard. Also said that if such action is taken, a reasoned order should follow.
A bench of Chief Justice Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice Hima Kohli on Monday upheld a decision given by the Telangana High Court three years ago.

The bench said that declaring the accounts as fraud also has adverse effects on the lives of the borrowers. The bank should give them an opportunity of being heard before classifying their accounts as fraud under the Fraud Guidelines.

The decision came on a petition by the State Bank of India. The bench said that the rule of 'audie alterm partem' should be read into the provisions of the RBI directive to protect them from arbitrariness. Under this no person shall be declared guilty without trial. Everyone has an opportunity of being heard.

RBI's 2016 Master Circular on 'Fraud Classification and Reporting on the part of Commercial Banks and Select FIS' was challenged before various High Courts.

It had asked banks to be cautious of big loan defaulters. RBI had said that banks should declare such accounts as fraud if found suspicious.

To incentivize religious conversions, the British granted Scheduled Tribe (ST) status and government facilities to those who converted to Christianity. Those who converted were referred to as the Kuki clan, while the Vaishnav people were known as Maiti Samaj.

During this period, there were fewer distinct states, and many Naga people also converted to Christianity. As a result, the balance shifted, and the number of Christian followers became comparable to that of Vaishnavs. The British managed to reduce the number of Meitei Hindus and increase the number of converted individuals, with the Kuki and Naga people occupying 90% of Manipur's territory, while only 10% remained for the Meitis.

After India gained independence, the ruler of Manipur, Bodh Chandra Singh, decided to merge the state with India. However, the Meitei community, comprising the remaining 10% of the population, was not granted ST status despite requests to Nehru. Instead, the Land Reform Act of 1960 further favored the Kuki and Naga Christians by designating 90% of the land as ST, allowing them to move freely, settle, and buy land, while denying these rights to the Meitei Hindus in the remaining 10% area. This led to protests by the Meitei people against the Indian government's indifference.

Subsequently, external forces like MI6 from England and ISI from Pakistan began arming the Kuki and Naga groups, causing unrest and violence in the region. The struggle for survival among the tribal communities in the Northeast escalated, with different factions forming separate fronts. The ISI-backed Kuki, Naga, and Chin groups from Myanmar illegally entered India and clashed with the non-Delhi-supported tribes, including the Meitei Vaishnavs. The situation worsened, and there were instances of armed confrontations and airstrikes ordered by the Indian government.

In 1971, the formation of Bangladesh and the division of Pakistan somewhat affected ISI's operations, but they continued their activities through Myanmar's cooperation. The Jaw tribe from Myanmar was brought into Manipur with the support of Congress and the illegal Jaw settlers began cultivating o***m in the forests. The Northeastern states of Manipur, Mizoram, and Nagaland became hubs for o***m cultivation and smuggling by the Kuki and Jaw tribes, fueling an economy of arms trafficking. As a consequence, a significant portion of the population in these regions became addicted to drugs, leading to continued conflict against India.

The situation began to change after 2014 when the Modi government initiated the Act East Policy and focused on the Northeast region. Violence decreased following the "Naga Accord" between NSCN and the Government of India, and attacks on the Indian army subsided. Progress and development projects by the Indian government brought opportunities for people in the region to connect with the capital, Delhi.
