On April 27, 2024, the Department of Business Administration, Faculty of Management Studies and Research, Aligarh Muslim University, organized a workshop under "Sustainability in Business” taught by Prof. Ayesha Farooq, Dean, FMSR. This event aimed to merge academic insights with real-world applications in sustainability, providing a platform for students to showcase their semester-long projects.

The event commenced with a welcome address by Prof. Jamal Farooquie, Chairman, DBA. He emphasized the importance of sustainability and the need to inculcate the same in our daily lives. This was followed by an introduction from Prof. parvaiz talib, who underscored the significance of the ensuing discussions. Pro. Ayesha Farooq highlighted the workshop's objectives and introduced the guest speaker and alumni, Mr. Arif Akhtar, General Manager (CSR) at Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL). He was accompanied by his wife Mrs. Deeba Arif.

Mr. Arif Akhtar opened the event with a comprehensive session on sustainable development principles and their implementation in the business sector, particularly highlighting Indian Oil's initiatives. His presentation covered the theoretical aspects of sustainability and delved into practical challenges and strategies for incorporating these practices within corporate frameworks. Following Mr. Akhtar's address, students grouped by their project themes presented their live projects, demonstrating the application of sustainability concepts learned in class.

In total, 8 student groups presented their work on various sustainability themes, including food waste management, rainwater harvesting systems, smart lighting control, awareness regarding blood donation, waste segregating and processing, hydroponic farming, sustainable communication, and sustainable digital data infrastructure. The workshop effectively provided a real-time learning platform for students, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. The top three finalist groups were shortlisted, with one sponsorship to be awarded.

Mr. Aktar appreciated the efforts of the faculty and students and congratulated the department for playing an active role in sustainable development.

A Workshop on ‘PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT’ was organized by the Personality Assessment and Mentoring Committee, Department of Business Administration (DBA), Faculty of Management Studies and Research, Aligarh Muslim University on April 25, 2024. The main objective of this workshop was to guide participants in unlocking their potential and elevating their confidence, communication skills, and emotional intelligence for their professional careers.

Prof. Jamal Farooquie, Chairman, DBA, warmly welcomed the resource person- Ms. Shahwar Shohrat, faculty members, and participants. Ms. Shahwar Shohrat is an alumna of AMU and the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT). Prof. Ayesha Farooq, Dean, FMSR, introduced Ms Shahwar Shohrat to the audience as a dynamic female leader and entrepreneur with extensive experience establishing and managing businesses and a strong humanitarian ethos. Prof. Parvaiz Talib, Faculty-in-charge of the Personality Assessment and Mentoring Committee of DBA highlighted the need to organize such workshops.

During the Workshop session, Ms Shahwar Shohrat addressed several pertinent issues related to personality development. She emphasized the duality of personality, encompassing both internal and external facets, and the lifelong journey of personality development from birth. The focus was on non-verbal communication, including body language, maintaining eye contact, and being alert. Practical tips on crafting a positive aura through self-impression and positive self-talk were offered. Ms Shahwar concluded with a reminder to practice the perpetual learning process. Her talk was followed by a Q&A session. Dr. Zareen Husain Farooq, faculty-in-charge of DBA's Personality Assessment and Mentoring Committee, proposed a Vote of Thanks.

FMSR, AMU welcomes delegation from Ahlul Bayt (AS) International University, Tehran, Iran
On 8th February 2024, a meeting was convened at the Office of the Dean, Faculty of Management Studies and Research, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), between Prof. Ayesha Farooq, Dean, FMSR, and Dr. Saeed Jazari Mamoui, Vice-Chancellor of Ahlul Bayt (AS) International University, Tehran, Iran. Accompanied by other dignitaries, including Prof. Ali Mohammad Naqavi from AMU, the discussion centred on fostering mutual cooperation between the two institutions in various academic endeavours.

The areas of collaboration identified during the meeting encompass several significant aspects. Firstly, it was proposed that interested MBA – IBF students at AMU could undertake summer internships in Islamic Banks in Iran, leveraging the strong presence of such institutions in the region. Detailed arrangements for this initiative were acknowledged to be worked out later.

Secondly, the potential for MBA – IBF students to pursue Ph.D. programs in Islamic Banking at Ahlul Bayt (AS) International University, Tehran, subject to AMU approvals, was discussed. Furthermore, it was suggested that such scholars might be sponsored by ASIU, Tehran.
Additionally, collaboration between the faculties was explored, with the possibility of DBA faculty teaching courses at Ahlul Bayt (AS) International University, and vice versa. Exchange programs for select students from both institutions were also considered, allowing them to visit each other for short durations. The detailed agenda for such exchanges would be worked out at a later stage.

The meeting also delved into the potential for mutual cooperation in delivering online lectures and organizing programs, wherever feasible. Prof. Jamal A Farooqui, Chairperson of DBA, along with Prof. Javaid Akhter, Prof. Parvaiz Talib, Prof. Saboohi Nasim, Dr. Asad Rehman, Dr. Ahmad Faraz Khan, Dr. Lamay Bin Sabir, and Dr. Zareen Hussain Farooque, were present during the discussions.

After the meeting, the delegation, including the Vice-Chancellor and accompanying dignitaries, was given a tour of the facilities at FMSR, where interactions with first-year students took place in LT1. Subsequently, the delegation departed from the department.

February 3rd, 2024: The Department of Business Administration (DBA), Faculty of Management Studies and Research, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) organized an extension lecture on Recent Technological Trends and its Impact on Business by Mr. Tariq Khan, as Senior Distinguished Technologist at Hewlett Packard, USA. The goal was to equip students with insights into the evolving technological landscape and its implications for businesses. Professor Jamal Farooquie, Chairman, DBA, extended a warm welcome to Mr. Khan, and the enthusiastic audience. Professor Saboohi Nasim introduced Mr. Khan, detailing his impressive career at HP and his distinguished alumni status at Aligarh Muslim University.

Mr. Khan emphasized the pivotal role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as the driving force behind technological advancements. He described AI as leveraging vast data for predictive purposes, surpassing human creativity in generating text, images, and videos based on provided descriptions. While acknowledging the transformative potential of Generative AI, Mr. Khan also discussed its potential downsides. He highlighted how AI can automate tasks requiring both imagination and specific skills, raising concerns about job displacement and the need for societal adaptations. Concluding the lecture, Mr. Khan urged students to embrace technological advancements rather than fear them. He emphasized the importance of continuous experimentation and flexibility to adapt to the ever-changing business landscape.

Following the presentation, an engaging Q&A session with students allowed further exploration of the discussed topic. The event concluded with a vote of thanks, leaving a lasting impression on the audience, and encouraging them to engage with the dynamic world of technology actively. The students of the co-curricular committee of the department organized the event.

The Entrepreneurship Committee under the aegis of the Department of Business Administration, organized an extension lecture on “Importance of Leadership and Networking for Startups” on 23rd November 2023 by Mohammad Hamza, Founder and Director of Engineering and Environmental Solutions Pvt. Ltd.

Mohammad Hamza, an alumnus of Aligarh Muslim University, shared his entrepreneurial journey with the students. He emphasized the importance of sharing one’s entrepreneurial vision and ideas with people to win their trust and make them part of success. He motivated the students to take up entrepreneurial careers and start interacting with people. From his life experiences, Hamza advised the students to build their startups on trust and transparency.

While presenting the concluding remarks, Prof. parvaiz talib, advised the students to take Hamza’s words in letter and spirit while pursuing their startup journeys. Syed Aemad Ahmad Zaidi of MBA first year extended the vote of thanks to Mohammad Hamza for his time, Dr. Ahmad Faraz Khan and Dr. Lamay Bin Sabir for convening the session, faculty members, and students for their valuable time. The program was ably compered by Abdullah Iftekhar of MBA first year.

October 13, 2023: Personality Assessment and Mentoring Committee of the Department of Business Administration (DBA), AMU, organized second one-to-one mentoring session on resume building for MBA final year students on October 13. This session was apart of ongoing mentoring sessions conducted by Mr. SAM Husaini, President and Chief Strategy Officer at Procrealligence, an illustrious alumnus of the Department of Business Administration, AMU. To set the ball rolling, Mr Husaini has initially conducted a Workshop on Personal Branding and Social Selling with the students of the Department. Later, ten students of MBA 2nd year were selected for one-to-one mentoring.

Drawing from earlier one-to-one mentoring session, students had submitted their re-designed resumes. In the mentoring session held on October 13, students received constructive feedback on improving their resumes further. Mr. SAM Husaini guided the students to emphasize on the outcomes of training and work experiences, presenting tangible results achieved. This approach not only showcases one's skills but also their valuable contributions. He advised the students to use a appealing statement or tagline in the opening of the resume to capture reader's attention. Students should also add elements that reveal their personality and human side, making resume more relatable to potential employers. He added that AI-based tools such as Chat GPT and Quill Bot should be utilised to enhance the fluency and coherence of resume content, ensuring it is both engaging and error-free. Mr. SAM Husaini encouraged the mentees to work as a team, leveraging each other's core competencies and collectively develop their areas of weakness. This collaborative approach elevates overall professional growth which could be presented to employers. Mr SAM Husaini recommended the students to develop a plan of action for subsequent mentoring sessions, outlining their goals and strategies for further improvement.

The faculty advisors of Personality Assessment and Mentoring Committee of DBA, AMU -Prof. Parvaiz Talib, Prof. Salma Ahmed, Dr Tariq Aziz and Dr Zareen Husain Farooq deeply appreciate the time and effort put in by SAM Husaini for making students market ready. Mr SAM Husaini has offered to conduct similar sessions for MBA first year as well. The Committee places on record the help extended by Chairperson, Prof Jamal A. Farooqui in smooth conduct of these sessions.

The Co-Curricular Committee, Department of Business Administration, FMSR, Aligarh Muslim University organised a one-day symposium on “Education and Career Opportunities for Management Graduates Abroad” on October 10, 2023. The objective of this symposium was to make students aware of the opportunities for management courses, research studies and pathways to various career alternatives abroad.

Professor Jamal A. Farooquie, Chairman, FMSR, extended a warm welcome to all the resource persons, esteemed guests, faculty members of the department, and enthusiastic participants. The first speaker for the symposium, Mr. K.M. Nadeem, Fleet Management at GBS Communications, Toronto, Canada, spoke about ‘Life of Aligs Abroad’ and briefed students about various advantages one can have as a student and a professional in Canada. Mrs. Farhat Khan, HR Professional from Ricoh, Canada highlighted the overall HR perspective in Canada including structured wages and labour protection.

The speaker for the second session was Mr. Syed Ali Rizvi, President at SPS ALFACHEM, United States of America. He talked about the Sir Syed Global Scholar Award. He started by briefing the students about how they could get the award, the history of SSGSA, and how SSGSA works for students after their selection. Next, he talked about the admission requirements abroad and graduate application timelines in the USA. He also mentioned the scholars who have availed of SSGSA studying in top universities of the world (156 students across 21 countries in 110 universities). He then suggested the students to opt for STEM MBA programmes in the USA as it gives 36 months of work permit after the completion.

The third speaker for the event was Mr. Akbar Shah, a marketing communications professional and entrepreneur, Toronto, Canada advised students not to fall prey to various agency traps as they may turn out to be fraud. He suggested to the students not to use any false credentials which will invite lifetime ban and can be a serious career limiting move.

The last speaker for the event was Mr. Faiz Ahmed Khan, Legal Associate at Jane Harvey Lawyers, Canada, discussed the legal aspects surrounding immigration. He delves upon various benefits of pursuing two-year courses and suggested students to decide from research-based and course-based programmes before pursuing higher studies in US or Canada.

The event concluded with an interactive question and answer session, followed by concluding remarks by Prof. Parvaiz Talib and a vote of thanks by Ms. Kulsoom Fatima (MBAIB student). Ms. Nawazish Fatima (MBA Student) compered the event.

As part of the Special Campaign 3.0 for institutionalizing Swachhata and minimizing pendency in Government Offices, the Department of Business Administration, Aligarh Muslim University, organized a “Cleanliness Drive” on 7th October 2023 from 10:30 am onwards. The drive's objective was to sensitize all stakeholders to the ideals of ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’. The drive was widely publicised in the Department, and different sites were identified at the Frank and Debbie Islam Management Complex. On this occasion, a Brush and Cutter Machine donated by Mr. Abdul Qadir, a senior staff member, was inaugurated by Prof. Zaki Anwar Siddiqui, Member-in-charge, Land and Gardens, AMU.

The drive saw an overwhelming participation from students of MBA, MBA (International Business), MBA (Islamic Banking and Finance), and MBA (Health Administration). Prof. salma ahmed, Dean, Faculty of Management Studies and Research, Prof. Jamal Farooquie, Chairman, Department of Business Administration, along with other faculty members and Non-Teaching Staff of the department, accompanied the students and participated in the drive with full enthusiasm.

Dr. Asad Rehman, Dr. Tariq Aziz, and Dr. Ahmad Faraz Khan coordinated the drive and distributed ‘hand gloves and bags to all stakeholders to collect accumulated garbage and other unwanted materials, including plastic bottles, cans, etc.

September 30, 2023: While designing a Resume, one must answer questions such as - Who am I and Why should a firm hire you. This advice was offered by Mr SAM Husaini, President & Chief Strategy Officer at Procrealligence and an Alumnus (MBA 1994 Batch) of Department of Business Administration, AMU, while interacting with a group second year students of MBA on 30th September 2023. This session was arranged by Personality Assessment and Mentoring Committee of the Department of Business Administration (DBA), Faculty of Management Studies and Research (FMSR), AMU.

Mr SAM Husaini, with more than 30 years of experience of handling integrated global branding marketing & corporate communication networks in India and West Asia, is the founder President and Strategy Lead at PROCREALLIGENCE (combining Pro-activity, Creativity and Intelligence) - an agile brand, marketing and digital communication solutions firm, based in Gurugram. Starting his career in 1994 with Lintas India, he served other leading advertising firms such as Leo Burnett and McCann Erickson. He handled brands such as Wheel, Rin, Surf Excel, Coca Cola, MasterCard, Goodyear and Nestle, among others. He then moved to Gulf region and joined the BBDO Network in the MENA Region working on top tier brands, such as Henkel, Pepsi, Emirates Airlines, Etisalat, Barclays and many more. He established BBDO in Abu Dhabi as an integrated full services operation as a founding MD, ran it profitably for 9 years. Ever since he came back to India, he has been offering his services to his alma mater in the spirit of giving back, guiding students to become successful professional in the light of his own rich experience. This one-to-one mentoring session for students of MBA final year for developing their resumes was in continuation to a workshop conducted by him on Personal Branding and Social Selling earlier. In the light of that session students redesigned their Resumes and submitted for review. This mentoring session was conducted by him for students shortlisted by him as potential mentees.

Students received constructive feedback on improving and adding value to the resumes. He recommended use of keywords for describing internship and previous experiences. He suggested use of designing tools to develop creative resumes. He encouraged students to attend some online or offline courses or carry out live projects for companies nearby for better understanding of the concepts and strengthening resume. He helped students reflect on and identify their ambition, focus areas and what truly drives them. In subsequent sessions, he is scheduled to conduct mock interview sessions, followed by mentoring selected students in the field of Marketing and Branding.

Prof. Salma Ahmed, Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Jamal A. Farooqui, Chairperson of the Department and Prof. Parvaiz Talib, Faculty in-charge of the Personality Assessment and Mentoring Committee welcomed Mr SAM Husaini in the Department, while Dr Tariq Aziz and Dr Zareen Husain Farooq, other faculty advisors of the personality and assessment committee coordinated the entire event.

Alumni Relations Committee of the Department of Business Administration (DBA), Faculty of Management Studies and Research (FMSR), AMU organized Presentation and Training Workshop on “Personal Branding and Social Selling” on September 23, 2023 at Frank & Debbie Islam Management Complex, AMU. This workshop was conducted by an esteemed Alumnus of DBA, Mr SAM Husaini, President & Chief Strategy Officer at Procrealligence. Mr SAM Husaini is the Founder of Procrealligence, an integrated marketing company driven by proactivity, creativity, and intelligence. With a rich 29-year journey, he specializes in Strategic Business Planning, New Business Development, Market Research and Insight Mining, Brand Creation and Positioning and much more. He completed his MBA from AMU in 1994 and joined Lintas India where he worked with Unilever detergent on Wheel, Rin and Surf Excel in rural and urban India.

Through powerful slides and videos, Mr SAM Husaini outlined the art of developing impressive Resumes. He explained 10 rules of effective personal branding which includes figuring out goals, getting clear on what one wants to be, knowing audience, building personal brand online, social media presence, networking strategically, showcasing expertise through content creation, seeking endorsements and testimonials, continuously learning and improving, and delivering promises. In the end of the session, Mr SAM Husaini left the audience reflecting upon a question- Who is our problem? Mr Husaini identified one-self as the problem as one doesn’t realize his or her full potential and thus, doesn’t tap it.

Concluding remarks were presented by Prof. Parvaiz Talib, Faculty Member, DBA. The workshop was organized for MBA final year students. The members of Alumni Relations Committee of DBA- Prof. Javaid Akhter, Prof. Ayesha Farooq, Dr Asif Akhtar and Dr Zareen Husain Farooq were also present in the Workshop.

The Department of Business Administration, Aligarh Muslim University organized two extension lectures on 14 September 2023, catering to MBA students and research scholars. Professor Ranjeet Nambudiri, a distinguished scholar from IIM-Indore renowned for his expertise in the fields of OB & HR delivered lecture on "Honing Leadership Skills," for the first-year MBA students. During this engaging session, he delved into the age-old debate of whether leaders are born or made, while also exploring various leadership theories. Professor Valeed A Ansari initiated the session with his opening remarks, and Professor Parvaiz Talib brought it to a close with his concluding remarks.
Following this insightful lecture, Professor Nambudiri conducted a separate session entitled "How to do Meaningful Research?" for an audience comprising research scholars from the department. This session provided valuable insights into the research process, addressing topics such as the ongoing debate between rigor vs relevance in research and the distinction between interesting and important research topics. The session commenced with introductory remarks delivered by Prof Jamal A Farooquie, Chairperson of the Department, wherein he emphasized the significance of conducting research not solely for statistical metrics but also for its practical value to stakeholders. Dr Tariq Aziz provided closing remarks to conclude the session.
Both lectures were characterized by their interactive nature, with Professor Nambudiri graciously taking questions from the audience during a lively Q&A session that followed each presentation. These extension lectures served as an invaluable opportunity for both MBA students and research scholars to expand their knowledge and gain a deeper understanding of leadership and research methodologies.

Almuni Relations Committee of the Department of Business Administration (DBA), FMSR, AMU organized Talk Series 2.0 on "Brand story telling in the Age of AI" on September 13, 2023, at Frank & Debbie Islam Management Complex. The Talk was delivered by an esteemed Alumnus of DBA, Mr. SAM Husaini, President and Chief Strategy Officer at PROCREALLIGENCE.

Prof. Ayesha Farooq, Faculty Advisor, Alumni Relations Committee, introduced the theme to the audience. Prof. Ayesha underlined the significance of the brand image, citing Jeff Bezos as a prime example. She reminded that "Best Brands are built on great stories”. After highlighting Nike's 2021 brand campaign, rooted in honesty and resonance, she delved into Netflix's integration of Artificial Intelligence in its user interface for personalized consumer experience.

In his talk, Mr. SAM Husaini emphasized its role in automation while assuring that it could never replace human compassion. He raised a moral dilemma, highlighting the gift of choice and creativity bestowed upon humans and their decision to cede it to technology like ChatGPT, QuillBot and Midjourney. He added humour by telling how AMU Canteen holds the world's best storytellers. Mr SAM Husaini offered his mentorship and guidance to a few final-year students for summer internships to first-year students.

Mr SAM Husaini emphasized the influence of AI on brand storytelling, citing examples like the Samsung vacuum cleaner. He also made the audience aware of the role of neuroscience in brand storytelling. He said storytelling's essence is its power to create community bonds. He stressed the relevance of the hero's journey and the 3Cs in any story- Conflict, Character, and Climax. Mr SAM Husaini concluded his talk by encouraging the students to make their stories unique and harness the power of hard work to achieve greatness.

In concluding remarks, Prof. parvaiz talib, Faculty Member, DBA presented the key takeaways from the Talk. Mohammad Abubakar Khan, student, MBA final year proposed a Vote of Thanks. The talk was attended by MBA first year students and faculty members. Ayesha Shamsi, a student, MBA final year, Member of the Alumni Relations Committee, conducted the programme.

The Department of Business Administration organized an “Orientation Program” for the newly inducted students in its various programs on 11th Sept 2023.

Prof. Salma Ahmed, Dean, Faculty of Management Studies & Research, welcomed the guests and the students. She encouraged the students to spend their time in the Department judiciously.

Prof. Javaid Akhter, introduced the faculty members and office staff of the Department and how students can benefit from their vast experience. Prof. Jamal Ahmad Farooquie, Chairperson, Department of Business Administration apprised the students with the academic curriculum and briefed them of the important ordinances. Prof. Valeed Ahmad Ansari, made the students acquainted with the learning resources of the University and how they can take benefit from them. He emphasized that the students should take advantage of the “Mentor-Mentee” scheme of the Department to prepare themselves for the world beyond campus. Prof. Ayesha Farooq, Faculty In-charge Professional Skills Assessment, shed light on the importance of co-curricular and extra-curricular skills and motivated the students to participate in various activities organized under the committees of ‘Professional Skills Assessment’. Prof. Feza Tabassum Azmi, Faculty In-charge Industry Internships, explained to the students the mandatory requirement of industry internship and how it prepares them for professional careers. She further explained the main features of the “Anti-Ragging Campaign” to the students and advised them to respect each individual. Prof. Saboohi Nasim, Faculty In-charge Training & Placement, highlighted the efforts undertaken by the placement teams in the past and their achievements. She encouraged the students to come forward and contribute positively to these efforts.

Explaining the importance of entrepreneurship in today’s socio-economic scenario, Prof. Parvaiz Talib, Faculty In-charge Entrepreneurship, described the various initiatives under the Frank & Debbie Islam Entrepreneurship Incubation Centre and motivated the students to pursue entrepreneurial careers. Students from the final year, Ayesha Shamsi, and Puru Yasharth welcomed the freshers and invited them to mingle with the senior batch for experience sharing and peer learning. The program was conducted by Dr. Ahmad Faraz Khan.
