Biological diversity is often understood in terms of the wide variety of plants, animals and microorganisms, but it also includes genetic diversities between varieties of crops, plants and animals. Biological diversity resources are the pillars upon which we build civilizations. But loss of biodiversity threatens all, including our health. Given the importance of biodiversity, The United Nations has proclaimed May 22 as “The International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB)” to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues.

Happy World Bee Day!

There are 20000 known species of bees in the world classified under 8 families. Except Antarctica, bees are present in all the continents. Honey bees are vital for the survival of many plants and animals, as they pollinate about one-third of the world’s crops and 90% of the wild flowering plants. World Bee Day-2024 focuses on the theme "Bee engaged with Youth." This theme highlights the importance of involving young people in beekeeping & bee conservation efforts and raising awareness about the essential role of bees and other pollinators in agriculture, ecological balance, and biodiversity preservation.

HAPPY INTERNATIONAL LEOPARD DAY!

The leopard is an umbrella species/ flagship species/ keystone species for wider biodiversity conservation and maintaining the structure of the ecological communities. As per CITES, Leopards (Panthera pardus) have vanished from at least 40% of their historic range in Africa and over 50% of their historic range in Asia. Leopards are listed as Vulnerable by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) with some subspecies classified as Critically Endangered.

International Leopard Day has been celebrated worldwide on 3rd May every year to create mass awareness for the conservation leopard and its habitats.

CANICOSA´S PINE-OAK SYMBIOSIS: NATURE’S SYMBOL OF UNITY
Species: Pyrenean Oak (Quercus pyrenaica) and Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris)
Age: OAK-250 Years, PINE-130 Years
Region: Canicosa De La Sierra, Castilla and León, Spain

The trunk of an oak tree serves as a nest of Scots pine. A pine seed left in the hole of an oak tree, germinated and a small pine started to grow trying to find the light and nutrients. Both trees are alive and have been sharing living space for more than a century. The pine reaches 15 meters high, while the oak measures 12.5 meters height. This unusual model of coexistence is located in an old wooded pasture surrounded by oaks, in the village of Canicosa, Spain.

“Centre of Excellence in Pioneering Research, Innovation & Extension in Chironji Tree Cultivation”

College of Forestry, SHUATS has been doing pioneering research and extension works on the wonder tree called “Cuddaph Almond” or “Chironji” (Buchanania lanzan Spreng.) which will ensure high income to farmers. Commercially Chironji Tree species is known for edible kernels which fetches about Rs.600-2000/-per kilogram in local market. The research works on Chironji tree cultivation have been organised under the auspices of research project sponsored by Uttar Pradesh Council of Agricultural Research (UPCAR), Lucknow to College of Forestry, SHUATS entitled “Improvement of Chironji (Buchanania lanzan Spreng.) through Selection from existing Germplasm Resources”. Practical skill enhancement and technical training have been conducted for the farmers, faculty, research scholars and students on Chironji seedling production using advanced nursery techniques, planting techniques & plantation management.

It will be catastrophe in future if we fail to take concrete steps to solve the water crisis.

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF FORESTS CELEBRATIONS @ COLLEGE OF FORESTRY-SHUATS

College of Forestry, SHUATS, Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh organized “International Day of Forests (IDF)” celebrations on 21st March, 2024 to spread the awareness about the significance of Forests. The event was organised with the theme, “Forests and Innovation: New Solutions for a Better World”. Prof. Dr. Antony Joseph Raj, Dean of College of Forestry was the Chief Guest of the Occasion. “Quiz Competition” & “Drawing Competition” were conducted for the students of B.Sc. (Hons.) Forestry, M.Sc. programmes and Ph.D. programmes of College of Forestry. For emphasizing the role of forests & trees in national and rural development, a unique competition was conducted for the students to write maximum number of trees (scientific name) in 15 minutes time. Prizes, Medals and Certificates were distributed to the student winners of the competitions.

Forests have great potential for climate change mitigation & world forests absorb huge amount of carbon dioxide every year. Sustainably managed forests have multiple environmental and socio-economic functions and also improve the quality of life of nearly 1.6 billion people across the world who directly depend on forests for their livelihood.

Let us create awareness to people about significance of trees & forests and promote tree planting and tree cultivation.

20th March 2024

World Sparrow Day (WSD) is celebrated on March 20 every year with the intention of creating awareness about the importance of the existence of sparrows for our ecosystem and biodiversity. The Nature Forever Society of India and the Eco-Sys Action Foundation of France came up with the idea for World Sparrow Day in 2010, marking the beginning of a campaign to save these chirpy little birds. World Sparrow Day (WSD) is celebrated in 2024 under the official theme “I love sparrows”.
