Bias Bespoke Supply Co. is an online-only business selling a carefully chosen selection of sewing supplies from around the world.
A tailor came by our shop the other day to look at samples of hymo and left his airpods/aurbuds! We were hoping he’d come back by to get them, but now it’s been a few days and Unfortunately, we don’t know how to get back in touch with him. If you are him, lol, please reach out to me and tell me exactly what they look like! Pic preferred. Want to make sure they get returned properly. 💗 And on that note, we don’t yet have samples set up to look at them well at our tailor shop in Manhattan, and most of the sample books we do have are out of date, but hopefully that will be added in 2025?! We’ll see! 😸
So! Back in May (2024) we moved to Newark New Jersey, because we’d run out of space and needed more! We said we hoped to find a way to still offer Local Pickup in Manhattan, and we have, so here’s the update on how that’s working. In brief, it just takes an extra working day or two, but here are the details:
1. Order online at www.biasbespoke.com. If we receive your order by about 1pm on a weekday, then we can *likely* have it ready for pickup the following day. If we receive your order after that or on the weekend, then we can *likely* have it ready for pickup on the following working day. (We don’t work on weekends.)
2. At checkout, choose ‘Use my Account’ as the Shipping Option, so that it won’t charge you anything for shipping, and then in the ‘Notes’, write that you’d like to pick it up in Manhattan.
3. We’ll let you know when it’s available to be picked up, at Artur & Tailors Ltd, 247 W 35th St, Fl 7, NY NY 10001. Pickup hours in Manhattan are generally 9am-5:30pm, Monday to Friday.
We’re so excited about this new size of epaulettes! Do you see the two different sizes here? One is big, and one’s a bit less big! We had the medium-sized ones custom-made for us recently, so that they’ll fit well on smaller shouldered people. (And we improved the back attachment on them too! Will say more about that later!) Hope you like them! We’re just testing for now, and will get more in if they’re a hit. 😸
Long awaited pocketing is finally here! It’s on the website as “New Podesta”, because it’s so similar to the Podesta 100% cotton silesia pocketing we had for years (from a supplier who went out of business), but just a little higher thread count per inch. We still have some left of the old Podesta in some colors, but moving forward, this new one is what we’ll be able to restock! It’s still just as supple, at least as strong as before, and we have new colors too. 😁
It’s almost time! We have totally outgrown our Manhattan location, and have _just about a week left_ before we totally up and move Bias Bespoke to a new (larger) warehouse space in New Jersey!! We always knew that having the stockroom here in Manhattan was just temporary, that we’d outgrow it and have to move eventually. Somehow we made it work for almost 10 years (can you believe we started the business in 2014?!), by getting *very* creative and making aisles *very* narrow! 😆😆 But there are no more places to put shelves on the ceiling, lol, so it’s time to go! Please help us spread the word that we’re moving, so that fewer people just show up expecting to be able to buy things once we’re already gone. We will still have our tailoring shop at the same Manhattan address, but we’re just not sure yet if we’ll find a way to continue to do some kind of Local pickup or not. Stay tuned! And please be patient with us this month as we reorganize! We’ll try to keep orders moving out as smoothly as possible, but wow, it is a Full Upheaval! 😬😵💫🫠🫨🤓😍
We now have C.S. Osborne grommets by the gross, and back in stock again is the popular W-1 hand press machine. The press sets grommets, snaps, jeans rivets and covers buttons (with the correct die for each of those items). It’s an investment, but lasts forever. The quality is unmatched.
We love this use of rhinestone trim. So creative! This one is 2mm wide. Find it on our website! Link in bio.
It’s hard to buy fabrics online. If you can’t feel them, how to know for sure what you’re getting? Here’s are the two main types of one-side fusible fabric tape that we sell, and an explanation of their top uses. The first one is FF-582 - which is the one that looks like a plain weave here, in both white and black. We’ve stocked this tape for many years, have it in multiple widths*, and recommend it for use with tailoring fabrics. 🧵 The other one shown here is the black one laying here on the top of the others. It’s made from our FF-850 fabric that we also sell in 61” width, but here as a precut 1”. It’s ideal for putting in the seams of knits or stretchy fabrics when you want to have stable, flat (non-wrinkly!) seams. It’s about 2x as costly as the FF-582, but if you’re working with knits, it’s the right ‘tool’ for the job. We got this tape in because of another customer request (we love customer requests), and lately, people have started really discovering it….as you can see from the third pic. Sometimes of late, we’ve had a lot of orders show up overnight for this FF-850 fusible tape, perhaps because teachers have requested it for their students to use as part of a class project, or someone kindly posted about it/us on their IG? We appreciate it! 😍
(*Though, note that some widths are out of stock at the moment.)
Can’t get enough of making garments with these lovely petersham grosgrain ribbons from Italy. On this jacket (a personal project for ), they run up the sides of the jacket and then back down the inside of the sleeves. From experience, we’ve learned that not all grosgrain ribbons are equal! Weld tested out a couple of others that got ripply and pulled the fabric when sewn, but this one - our VERA ribbon in many widths - lays consistently flat and nicely when set into seams! ☺️
Another customer request! Part 1 of it, at least! Someone wanted to see pics of our corset supplies together, to see how they matched. So here are some of the colors of coutil — Rose Pink, Peach Pink, Caramel, Pale Gray, and Moss Green — with dyed-to-match lacings and Prussian tape for bone casings, and our closest matches of grommets and petersham-grosgrain ribbon too. Will be making a part 2 of this soon, with some of the other colors. 🥳
Whatever you celebrate, wishing you very Happy Holidays from us at Bias Bespoke!
Something(s) blue! A few of our blue trims, including petersham grosgrain ribbons, fringes, and other textured trims, mostly from European mills.
Our popular Interlining Sample Book is finally back in stock, with a few changes! 1. It came to our attention (after selling this for many years!) that no where on it does it say our name, 😂, so we’ve added a “Title page”. 2. Some of the canvases are out of stock (and may not be restocked in exactly the same composition, since their supplier is out of business). Others will be added in the future, but since that’s months from now, here’s a book to tide us all over.
Making overcoats, or jackets with belted details? These buckles and buttons are made to match!! We also have them in Dark Brown, Black, and a silvery-clear-black color combo. Find them on our website, www.biasbespoke.com, by searching “Finestra” (for the buckles), “Avery” (for the buttons - including extra oversized 70 line buttons!), and “Tetra” (for buttons in a slightly diffeeent style but that also have matching “Finestra” buckles!).
We are launching our mailing list this week! If you’ve already made an order through www.biasbespoke.com, then you’re probably on the list. If not, you can join us in the next day or so to not miss an email. 🪡 Why might you want to join? In each email, we’ll offer a mix of tips & info about sewing, as well as a time-limited coupon on a specific product or two, which will only be available through the email. (In our 9 years in business so far, we haven’t offered many coupons or sales, so we’ll be testing it out bit by bit there!) 🧵 To join our mailing list from our website, scroll down to the bottom of any page. You’ll see “Join our mailing list!” and can enter your email address and hit “Subscribe”. I’ll be sending out our first mailing in a couple of days, and then probably every couple of weeks to a month after. 💗We hope you will find these valuable, and as always, we welcome your ideas and suggestions!! Thank you for your support!!
Ooh! When I think “sexy” the first words that come to mind don’t tend to be “fastener tape”, lol, but geez, the garments that can be made with these hook & eye and eyelet tapes might make us all change our minds! 😂 Next time someone says sexy, who knows, ‘Fastener tape’ might just coo out of my mouth….🫦😉
Using our Selvino hymo canvas from Italy to make floating canvas fronts in suits at . So nice to work with these quality materials.
Spider buttons from Paris, France! They’re back in stock, along with many other favorites from the sixth-generation French metal-stamping factory. The machines and molds used to make these are more than a century old, still going strong.
Sometimes it’s noticing the simple, calming beautiful details that shift a day. ☀️ There’s been so much stress in Our world and The world lately (sending hugs and healing wishes to all) and this little rainbow of elastics on a customer’s order feels grounding in the best way. Hoping you’re also finding sweet moments of appreciating the beauty around you in your day. 💗
As you may know, we* at Bias Bespoke are a family business. At our center is one Armenian family: Artur along with his sisters Marina and Karina, and nephew Pavel and Pavel's wife Nara.
As you may not know, Armenia and the Nagorno-Karabakh region where Artur's family is from has just experienced a tragic exodus that will go down in history books of the region. All of the Armenian inhabitants of the Nagorno-Karabakh region have been forced off their land this week. It's land that they have lived on for millennia. We're talking about more than 100,000 people who left their homeland, in a mass exodus over about 24 hours. This came after a 9 month blockade of the only road that goes between Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh, so that the people who live in the region were left to fend for themselves for almost one year without food and supplies. About two weeks ago, there were reports of Azerbaijani soldiers (who claim the land as theirs**) beheading and ra**ng Armenians, as Russian "peacekeepers" did nothing. Artur's family still there hid in the forest for several days along with their whole village. One of Artur's relatives, a father of 3 daughters, was killed. A few days ago, Azerbaijan finally opened the sole road to Armenia, and Armenians fled en masse.
I’ve read news reports saying that Azerbaijan is encouraging Armenians to stay now that Nagorno-Karabakh has been dissolved, but when Artur was finally able to talk to a relative (cell service/phone lines were cut off for several days), they reported that no one was left in their village. All had fled or been forced out. About 50 Armenians had planned to stay, but when this relative saw a few of them in Goris days later, the place in Armenia where refugees are being checked in, they found out that Russian peacekeepers and Azeri soldiers came, called them "garbage" and other dehumanizing names as they forced any who remained to leave. He said “You see, we are garbage for them.”
Artur didn't really want to share here because it is awkward to mix selling buttons and trim with such familial and ancestral devastation. But to me it feels too important to my colleagues not to post anything about it here.I also wrote more about this (and will write more soon) on our Artur & Tailors page which feels only slightly less awkward. So, as the family is reeling from the mix of relief (so many family members still alive), grief (lost relatives and homeland), and curiosity for the future (will any family members may be allowed come to New York as refugees? if so what work we can give them?; and: will Armenia itself survive in a region that wants them gone?) -- it is not so hard to lean into the awkwardness. And through sharing, now you know more about what kind of family is behind this family business.
If you want to do something to help, please talk to friends and family about what's happening in Armenia. Bringing awareness to what's truly happening can go a long way toward helping this small (but democratic & kind country without oil riches) survive in a part of the world rife with oil-rich dictatorships who want them gone.
*The writer of these posts, me (Tova), am not Armenian, but I have been working with this family (and a crew of Ukrainian tailors) ever since I moved to New York City to study tailoring with Artur in 2010.
**The country of Azerbaijan was created in 1918 at the close of WWI. Lenin, the leader of Russia at the time, "gave" the Nagorno-Karabakh region to Azerbaijan, although it had been part of Armenia and was populated by Armenians.
So many beautiful genuine buffalo horn buttons being added to the shop. (In some new colors too! Never seen horn come in this sherbet-y orange color before, and might never see it again once it’s gone!)
This suit, made for a private client at , features inset stripes made from Bias Bespoke’s VERA petersham grosgrain ribbon. We thought about using fabric for these stripes and binding, but couldn’t find a tight enough weave in all the colors and the texture we wanted. Then we tried a couple of different grosgrain ribbons for these stripes, but those ribbons created buckling, so that the stripes didn’t lay flat. But with VERA, it was easy to get them to lie flat and perfect. We love VERA even more now, and I am already using it in my next jacket. 😍 What will you make with VERA ribbon?
These are the materials for a (gorgeous, modern, handmade) suit. Can you imagine what the final design looks like?! The bottom two fabrics were custom dyed by (a silk and wool, and a silk twill), the blue cotton velvet is from , the cotton and viscose ribbon is Bias Bespoke’s VERA grosgrain from Italy, and the buttons are also from Bias Bespoke (and also from Italy). Only the best materials went into it….and we love what it came out like….see the next post!
This is from another customer request! People love out transparent “lace tape” zippers so much, so here they our in our most popular colors - three n**e colors and three white colors - as invisible separating zippers. Separating invisible zippers are finicky to set in well, but if it’s what you need, give it a go! Perfect for sheer fabrics and laces.
How perfect is this tasseled cord from Bias Bespoke with this look our tailor shop made for the musical New York New York on Broadway? We were so excited to get to use it, and in such a perfect way! Looks like it was made for it, no? (See more pics at )
