A beautiful tribute to Indian heritage and versatile textiles by Google on our 77th Independence Day.

When I was approached to create the Google Doodle for India’s Independence Day, I felt that it would be a great opportunity to highlight India’s rich and diverse textiles traditions.

From intricate embroidery of the nomadic people of the the eastern desert region of Kutch to Jamdani weaving of West Bengal, Pashmina Kani weave shawl of the northernmost state of Jammu & Kashmir to the Benarsi weave of the ancient city of Varanasi, Ikat, Ilkal and Kanjeevaram weaves from the states of Orissa, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu respectively, Ajrakh and Kalamkari block printing techniques, Bandhni and Leheriya resist-dying techniques from Rajasthan and Gujarat respectively, this tapestry showcases the vast expanse and range of Indian textiles.

Through this artwork, my objective was to invite the audience to recognise the role of Indian textiles in shaping the county’s identity, past, present, and future.
