May 3rd is a pivotal date in the annals of Indian cinema, as it commemorates the release of India's maiden film, "Raja Harishchandra". Exactly 111 years ago today, this cinematic marvel, conceived and directed by Dadasaheb Phalke, graced the screens for the first time. In 1911, Phalke was captivated by the film "Life of Christ" during a screening at a Bombay theater (now Mumbai), which had premiered in 1906. It was this experience that ignited Phalke's aspiration to delve into the realm of filmmaking.

Embarking on a quest to master the craft, Phalke embarked on a two-week journey to London to absorb the nuances of filmmaking. Upon his return, he laid the cornerstone of his cinematic endeavor by founding the 'Phalke Film Company'. Importing state-of-the-art equipment from the United States, Germany, France, and England, Phalke embarked on his cinematic odyssey.

His journey included the creation of a short film titled "Ankurachi Wadh" (The Birth of a Pea Plant), which served as a testament to his vision, showcased to prospective investors to secure financial backing. Subsequently, Phalke advertised in newspapers to assemble his ensemble cast, predominantly comprising male actors like D.D. Dabke, Anna Salunke, Gajanan Vasudev, and Bhaurao Kolhatkar, reflecting the norms of the time where women's involvement in films was rare.

Assuming multiple roles, from scripting and makeup to direction and editing, Phalke orchestrated every aspect of his cinematic masterpiece. While he shouldered the creative burden, the technical expertise behind the camera was expertly handled by Trymbak B. Telang. Within a span of six months, the film's shooting concluded, followed by a 27-day production process.

The culmination of Phalke's visionary endeavor came to fruition with the grand premiere of "Raja Harishchandra" at the Olympia Theater in Bombay on April 21, 1913. Subsequently, on May 3, 1913, the film received its official release at the Coronation Hall in Girgaon, marking the dawn of a new era in Indian cinema.

This isn't an average picture - it's a snapshot from a significant film dating back to 1917 called "Keechaka Vadham". What makes this film special? Well, it holds the distinction of being the first film ever made in South India. Remarkably, it's a silent film. Today, the allure of South Indian cinema extends far beyond national borders; it's celebrated worldwide. "Keechaka Vadham" marks the inception of the South Indian film industry, helmed by director R. Nataraja Mudaliar. Notably, it stands as the inaugural Tamil film. Sadly, there are no preserved prints of this cinematic milestone.
