Q. What is TAVI?

A.“Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) or implantation (TAVI) is a highly technical and minimally invasive procedure for inserting a new valve within the damaged one without removing the old valve. Unlike traditional open-heart surgeries that require a sternotomy, TAVI uses small incisions, keeping the chest bones intact. While TAVI is not without risks, it offers treatment options for those previously ineligible for valve replacement.”

Q. You and the team at Arihant Hospital have successfully performed 7 TAVI procedures to date. Can you share a special case where TAVI was done?

A.“Yes, several TAVI procedures have been successfully performed by me and the team at Arihant Hospital. Notably, Karnataka’s 1st and India’s 2nd alternate route TAVI was successfully performed at Arihant Hospital on a 75-year-old lady from Sangola, Maharashtra. She was admitted with severe aortic stenosis. Since she was cachexic, traditional surgery carried a high risk. TAVI was evaluated by the doctors and discussed with the patient. It was carried out by a team of doctors led by Dr. Anmol Sonawe, Dr. Mahaadev D Dixit, myself, Dr. Prashanth MB, and Dr. Ambrish Nerlikar. Normally, this procedure is performed through the Femoral artery (Groin Vessels), but as her groin vessels were very small, an alternative route through the Carotid Artery (Neck Vessels) was used.”

Historic Life-Saving Cardiac Surgery Successfully Performed on 7-Month Pregnant Woman

Dr. M.D. Dixit and his skilled team of surgeons successfully performed the world's first total arterial triple-vessel coronary bypass surgery on a 7-month pregnant woman on Jan 1, 2024.

The 37-year-old patient, in her 7th month of pregnancy, faced complex cardiac issues, making conventional CABG nearly impossible, and Coronary Angioplasty posed risks due to radiation. In the face of these challenges, the surgical team, including Dr. Amrut Nerlikar, Dr. Abhishek Joshi, Dr. Nikhil Dixit, Dr. Prashant MB, Dr. Avinash Londhe, and Dr. Soubhagya Bhat, opted for total arterial revascularization using the LIMA-RIMA 'Y' technique for three grafts.

Ensuring the safety of both mother and unborn child was paramount. The surgical team's meticulous planning and ex*****on, along with vigilant monitoring & care in the ICU & the ward resulted in a successful outcome. The patient was discharged on 8th Jan, marking a triumph in the field of cardiac surgery during pregnancy.
