ओवरी में गांठ यानी सिस्ट बनने की स्थिति को मेडिकल भाषा में ओवेरियन सिस्ट कहते हैं। ओवरी महिला की प्रजनन प्रणाली का एक महतवपूर्ण हिस्सा होता है। हर महिला में दो ओवरी होते हैं।
अंडों का निर्माण ओवरी में होता है और वे वहीं पूर्ण रूप से तैयार (परिपक्व/मैच्योर) होते हैं। ओवरी से अंडो के बाहर आने की प्रक्रिया को ओवुलेशन कहते हैं।
मैच्योर होने के बाद अंडे ओवरी से बाहर निकलकर फैलोपियन ट्यूब में चले जाते हैं जहां पुरुष स्पर्म उन्हें फर्टिलाइज करता है।
फर्टिलाइजेशन के बाद प्रेगनेंसी की प्रक्रिया शुरू होती है। ओवरी में किसी तरह की समस्या होने पर ओवुलेशन नहीं होता है।
ओवुलेशन नहीं होने पर अंडे रिलीज नहीं होते हैं। नतीजतन, महिला को गर्भधारण करने में दिक्कते आती हैं। ओवरी में कई तरह की समस्याएं पैदा होती हैं, सिस्ट बनना भी उन्हीं में से एक है।
