Heat Wave conditions can result in physiological strain, which could even result in death.

TIPS FOR TREATMENT OF A PERSON AFFECTED BY A SUNSTROKE:
1. Lay the person in a cool place, under a shade. Wipe her/him with a wet cloth/wash the body frequently. Pour normal temperature water on the head. The main thing is to bring down the body temperature.
2. Give the person ORS to drink or lemon sarbat/torani or whatever is useful to rehydrate the body.
3. Take the person immediately to the nearest health centre. The patient needs immediate hospitalisation, as heat strokes could be fatal.

Acclimatisation
People at risk are those who have come from a cooler climate to a hot climate. You may have such a person(s) visiting your family during the heat wave season. They should not move about in open field for a period of one week till the body is acclimatized to heat and should drink plenty of water. Acclimatization is achieved by gradual exposure to the hot environment during heat wave.

Behind every piece of clothing in a store, there is an industry stripping the Earth of its limited resources and exploiting the labor force that works in its garment factories. Tremendous waste characterizes this industry as it depletes healthy soil, contaminates fresh water sources, pollutes the air we breathe, defiles our oceans, destroys forests and damages eco-systems and the health of their biodiversity.

On this Earth Day, let us pledge towards making Sustainable fashion a part of our lives.

Sustainable fashion refers to a clothing supply chain that is ecologically and socially responsible. It aims to reorient the industry and consumers away from the fast fashion model and toward sustainable practices in sourcing, production, distribution, marketing, and consumption.

Colitis is inflammation in your colon, which is the main part of the large intestine. There are different types of colitis, with different causes. Some are short-lived and easy to treat, like when someone has a bacterial infection from food poisoning. Other types — called inflammatory bowel diseases — are more chronic and difficult to treat.

Common symptoms include: Abdominal pain, Bloated stomach, Urgent diarrhea, Mucus or blood in p**p, Loss of appetite, Weight loss,
Acute cases may cause: Nausea and vomiting, Fever,
Chronic cases may cause: Fatigue, Anemia, Dehydration, Malabsorption and malnutrition.

Chronic Pulmonary Aspergillosis (CPA) is a long-term Aspergillus infection of the lung, usually but not exclusively caused by Aspergillus fumigatus. Unlike acute forms of aspergillosis, CPA affects immunocompetent people and fungal growth is consequently slow.

CPA commonly causes cavities in lung tissue containing balls of fungal growth (aspergilloma). Patients commonly have pre-existing or co-existing lung disease, e.g. asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), tuberculosis, cystic fibrosis, and other pre-existing lung damage.

The diagnosis of CPA requires a combination of characteristics: one or more cavities with or without a fungal ball present or nodules on thoracic imaging, direct evidence of Aspergillus infection (microscopy or culture from biopsy) or immunological response to Aspergillus spp. and exclusion of alternative diagnoses, all present for at least 3 months.

Symptoms
1. Patients with aspergillomas often have few specific symptoms, but 50-90% experience some coughing up of blood.
2. For other types of CPA, symptoms may include weight loss, fatigue, cough, haemoptysis and breathlessness, usually for a period longer than 3 months.

“Cell phone addiction” may refer to a compulsive and excessive reliance on mobile devices that causes negative consequences in various aspects of life. Problematic smartphone use can have several adverse effects on children and adolescents.

Helping a child or teen with cell phone addiction may require a supportive and proactive approach.

Potential strategies include:
1. Establishing open communication: This may be key when dealing with a child or teen’s cell phone use. It is important to build trust by allowing them to express concerns and listening without judgment.
2. Setting clear boundaries: Establishing clear guidelines and rules regarding cell phone use may include limiting social media use or screen time to 1–2 hours per day, etc.
3. Being a role model: Modeling healthy phone habits may help children and teenagers improve their own smartphone usage.

Encouraging healthier behaviors
We recommend that parents and caregivers encourage and support the child or teen to engage in the following:

1. Alternative activities: People can try providing the child or teen with engaging alternatives to cell phone use. Participation in physical activities, hobbies, and social interactions can promote a well-rounded lifestyle.
2. Healthy habits: This may include helping the child or teen establish habits such as getting enough sleep, maintaining a balanced diet, and engaging in regular physical activities.
3. Face-to-face connections: People can encourage the child or teen or engage in social activities and build real relationships with friends and family through face-to-face interactions.

What Are The Health Impacts Of Heat Waves?

The nature of the health impacts of heat wave depends on multiple factors including the timing, intensity and duration of exposure to the extreme hot temperature. As per the National Disaster Management Authority, the health impacts of heat waves usually involve dehydration, heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

The signs and symptoms include:

1. Heat Cramps: Edema (swelling) and Syncope (Fainting) generally accompanied by fever below 102°F
2. Heat Exhaustion: Fatigue, weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea, vomiting, muscle cramps and sweating
3. Heat Stroke: Body temperatures of 104°F or more along with delirium, seizures or coma. This is a potentially fatal condition. A heat stroke occurs when the body is unable to control its temperature. The body temperature rises rapidly, the sweating mechanism fails, and the body cannot cool down.

Have you been to a library or a bookstore recently?

If you don’t like reading books, that’s okay. But given the positive benefits on your overall well-being, consider starting small and reading just 20 minutes a day. Here are some ways you can ease into reading books:

1. Swap scrolling through your phone for reading just one time per day.
2. Develop a routine such as reading before bedtime or sip your favorite beverage when you read.
3. Select books on topics you’re curious about and really like.
4. Research what people you admire read to connect with them through books, whether a celebrity, colleague, parent or best friend.

Reading a book is like superfood for the brain. Reading keeps your brain active and promotes mental and emotional fitness.

07/04/2024

Which book are you reading currently?

Reading a book is like superfood for the brain. Studies using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) have shown that reading is a complex task involving different parts of the brain. By observing changes to blood flow in the brain, researchers can see that reading stimulates the brain’s neural pathways. This stimulation enhances brain activity, memory and cognitive function — ultimately boosting creativity and expanding learning capacity.

Benefits of Reading
Reading has physical benefits in addition to being an intellectual workout. Research shows that regular reading can lower blood pressure, reduce stress and improve sleep quality. Researchers have also found a link between reading books and longevity; reading keeps your brain active and promotes mental and emotional fitness.

Gastrointestinal diseases affect the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Such diseases can be prevented or minimized by maintaining a healthy lifestyle, practicing good bowel habits and getting screened for cancer.

A**l fissures
A**l fissures are also a structural disease (where the bowel looks abnormal upon examination and also doesn't work properly). They are splits or cracks in the lining of the a**s. The most common cause of an a**l fissure is the passage of very hard or watery stools. The crack in the a**l lining exposes the underlying muscles that control the passage of stool through the a**s and out of the body. This leads to intense burning pain, bleeding, or spasms after bowel movements.

Initial treatment for a**l fissures includes pain medicine, dietary fiber to reduce the occurrence of large, bulky stools and sitz baths (sitting in a few inches of warm water).

The most noticeable symptom is swelling in the face. Swelling can last five to seven days. The other noticeable symptom is neck pain in the area between your ear and jaw. Other symptoms include:

- A high fever (103°F to 104°F) that lasts two to three days
- Chills
- Loss of appetite
- Headache
- Sore throat
- Swelling of the temples

Mild symptoms usually disappear within two weeks.

“Cell phone addiction” may refer to a compulsive and excessive reliance on mobile devices that causes negative consequences in various aspects of life. However, some studies suggest children and teens may experience an overwhelming preoccupation with cell phones. This may lead to an inability to control or limit phone usage, even in situations where their use is inappropriate. It may cause them to neglect their responsibilities and relationships and exhibit restlessness and anxiety when unable to access their phones.

Problematic smartphone use can have several adverse effects on children and adolescents. These may include:

1. Impaired social skills: Excessive smartphone usage can hinder the development of crucial social skills, causing difficulties with face-to-face interactions, empathy, and effective communication.
2. Reduced academic performance: Spending too much time on smartphones may diminish interest in learning.
3. Sleep disturbances: Looking at screens before bedtime may cause changes in sleep patterns, difficulty falling asleep, and reduced quality sleep. This may lead to fatigue and limited alertness the following morning.
4. Emotional and mental well-being: Excessive smartphone use can negatively impact a child or teen’s emotional state. It may contribute to feelings of loneliness, depression, and low self-esteem.
5. Increased risk of cyberbullying and online dangers: Spending excessive time on a smartphone exposes children and teens to potential hazards, such as cyberbullying, online predators, and inappropriate content.
