Switching off inflammatory protein leads to longer, healthier lifespans in mice.
Scientists at the Medical Research Council Laboratory of Medical Science and Imperial College London have discovered that 'switching off' a protein called IL-11 (interleukin 11) can significantly increase the healthy lifespan of mice by almost 25%.
👉The results, published in Nature, were dramatic, with mice given the anti-IL-11 drug from 75 weeks of age until death having their median lifespan extended by 22.4% in males and 25% in females. The mice lived for an average of 155 weeks, compared with 120 weeks in untreated mice.
🤞While these findings are only in mice, it raises the tantalising possibility that the drugs could have a similar effect in elderly humans. Anti-IL-11 treatments are currently in human clinical trials for other conditions, potentially providing exciting opportunities to study its effects in ageing humans in the future."
Exciting moment as our accomplished alum, Dr. Sudipta Maity, takes the stage to discuss the Bio-Entrepreneurship Ecosystem within the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistant Council, Govt of India. A passionate advocate for student-led academic innovations through BIRAC's E-YUVA scheme, Dr. Maity sparks awareness at the DBT Star College, College of Basic Science and Humanities, leaving an impact in the Diamond Jubilee Lecture Series orchestrated by IQAC. The world’s first CRISPR therapy is approved and It is Huge!
The UK’s regulator and US's regulator has approved the world’s first CRISPR–Cas9 gene editing therapy, which aims to cure sickle cell disease and transfusion-dependent β-thalassemia. Casgevy (exagamglogene autotemcel) is a first-of-its-kind treatment made by and CRISPR Therapeutics in Zug, Switzerland.
The approval sets the stage for US Food and Drug administration (FDA) go-aheads expected on 30 March 2024 for for β-thalassemia also.
CRISPR systems technology is used by Vertex Pharmaceuticals to develop in vivo gene-editing therapies for that specific purpose.
It comes just 11 years after Jennifer Doudna and Emmanuelle Charpentier invented the technology. The green light from the Medicines and Healthcare Products Agency represents a major scientific achievement for Vertex and CRISPR and a landmark for the biotech industry
VIPER will be NASA's first robotic Moon rover. It will embark on a mission to the lunar South Pole region to trek into permanently shadowed areas and unravel the mysteries of the Moon’s water. VIPER will be the first rover to measure the location and concentration of water ice and other resources. These resources could eventually be harvested to sustain human exploration on the Moon, Mars — and beyond! Let's signing up to fly your name on VIPER
Wishing you all a happy New Year 2024

📢Scientists Use CRISPR to Make Chickens🐓 More Resistant to Bird Flu
🐔In a world-first, researchers
used the gene-editing tool CRISPR to make specific changes to a gene called ANP32 that is essential to support flu viruses inside chickens' cells. Flu viruses hijack proteins like ANP32 inside cells to help themselves replicate, and the edits in chickens were designed to stop the growth of bird flu.
📢In the recent years, the three main nuclease-mediated gene editing tools including transcription activator-like nucleases (TALENs), zinc finger nucleases (ZFNs), and clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat (CRISPR)/CRISPR-associated nuclease 9 (Cas9) have been widely used in research of life threaten disease including HIV.
👉 In 2018, Dr. He Jiankui with Zhang Renli and Qin Jinzhou from the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) in Shenzhen, China, remove the CCR5 gene from human embryos of a HIV positive father and negative ma ther, resulted born of 3 healthy girl named Lulu (Chinese: 露露) Nana (娜娜), and Amy. Though this actions received widespread criticism from an Ethical point of view still due to its high accuracy and efficiency, CRISPR/Cas9 techniques may provide a great chance to treat some gene-related diseases by disrupting, inserting, correcting, replacing, or blocking genes for clinical application with gene therapy
