QUIT SMOKING
It’s very clear again!
A recent study published in NEJM reconfirms the well-known fact.

1.48 million adults were followed for 15 years.

Current smokers had higher hazard ratios for death compared with never smokers.

Survival between 40 and 79 years of age was 12 and 13 years less in women and men, respectively, who smoked compared with never smokers.

Former smokers also showed an increased rate of death but at a slower pace than current smokers.

What is the good point about smoking cessation?
Even short-term cessation for fewer than 3 years was associated with a lower excess risk of 95% in women and 90% in men younger than 40 years of age, with notable beneficial associations also observed in women and men aged 40 to 49 years (81% and 61%, respectively) and 50 to 59 years of age (63% and 54%, respectively).

To conclude, smoking cessation at any age was associated with longer survival, particularly cessation before 40 years of age.

Is there a relation between the duration of cessation and the benefit of increased survival?

Yes. Quitting smoking is awesome. Longer the cessation period, the higher the survival benefits.
Among all ages, and compared with continued smoking, cessation of fewer than 3 years potentially averted 5 years of life lost, and cessation for 10 or more years averted about 10 years of life lost, yielding survival similar to that of never smokers.

So, please QUIT SMOKING.

It was 1993-1994 when I was a young kid, who aspired to join the national defence academy (NDA) . I saw my dream shattered due to eye issues that required him to wear spectacles. This forced me to change my strategy.

In 1999, as a young boy, studying in the TN state board, I faced failure in cracking the CBSE board-based Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) entrance examinations to pursue MBBS at AFMC. However, I managed to succeed in the TN entrance examinations and gained admission to Madras Medical College.Later , I pursued MD in medicine, DM in cardiology, and advanced fellowships in intervention cardiology and structural heart disease interventions from abroad.

Being a Professor of Cardiology working at Sri Ramachandra Medical College , Chennai , I was privileged to serve as an external examiner at the same institute, AFMC, and also delivered a lecture for MD medicine and DM cardiology students. This journey proves that trusting your passion will lead to success, whether it happens now or later . And we should dream, dream and dream as rightly told by Late HE Dr APJ Abdul Kalam sir.

Failures do happen in life. We need to go ahead, and face the reality with a goal of changing it to a successful one.

I am extremely thankful to my parents, teachers, my family, and my extended family (my friends). Many thanks to AICTS (Cardio-thoracic Sciences Center of AFMC) and Brigadier Navreet Singh sir for providing me with this incredible opportunity.
