Its more than a decade since we at Crea started the experiment of a stand alone Embryology services unit with the goal of offering services including training and education. Though much ahead of its time, few IVF practitioners who recognized the importance of embryologists in the whole IVF scenario and the importance of consistency and standardization of culture conditions and techniques in the IVF labs partnered with us and we are happy that till date we have continued our services with the same vigour, passion and commitment. Pitted against the freelance concept, this was and is still to some extent a relatively novel approach in embryology work and luckily the govt regulations have now called upon the need to have permanent and consistent workforce in the IVF labs.

As an organization which takes pride in its scientific and ethical approach to patient healing, Crea has come a long way in this journey. It is our strong belief that a cookie cutter approach may not work in the IVF segment be it in terms of stimulation protocols or the practical skills needed in the lab. Over the years we have also seen that, how many ever new “add-ons” may enter the market and how many ever “revolutionary” concepts come into play, a committed, scientific and sensible approach is what is much needed than some super expensive gadget which promises only decimal level increments in results and may literally make the treatment more expensive for the patients. Of course that should not stop us from entering new frontiers if genuine improvement is achieved in the treatment process backed up by strong research.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our partners who stood with us in this journey. Patients, doctors, students, companies and our own team and the almighty who has blessed us to serve our purpose and be instrumental in providing a ray of hope to childless couples.

Know your Embryologist

IVF and assisted reproduction is here to stay. With increasing incidence of infertility worldwide, Assisted Reproduction as a speciality in every other hospital set up is inevitable eventually. But do patients really understand the entire process and the key players involved?? Who are the people who actually handle the gametes, manipulate them and ultimately hugely responsible for their success?

Embryology and embryologists play a key role in the entire process of IVF. They choose your s***m, your egg, they manipulate them and culture them before the developed embryo is put back into the uterus. The knowledge and skill set of these important people in IVF is directly proportional to the results.

There is an increasing trend of doctors turned embryologists which is a healthy, welcome change in this speciality. Before you attempt your IVF cycle ask for the details of your embryologist. The qualification, experience and the success rates of each embryologist varies. So go ahead…..” know your embryologist”.

Freeze all cycles in IVF

Freeze all cycles in IVF have become the norm in many centres now. But why did this practice start in the first place? This was done initially to avoid complications due to hyper stimulation. Now adopted as a routine in many places.

The argument in favour of this concept is that, when you freeze the embryos and transfer in a subsequent cycle the endometrium is more receptive and the supraphysiological hormonal pattern can be avoided. Now let us see why this situation arises.

The number of Oocytes retrieved in a particular cycle depends on the ovarian stimulation which ultimately not only depends on the skill of the physician but also the confidence he has on his lab to give him good quality embryos.

An IVF lab with excellent air quality and skilled embryologists will have no difficulty in producing good quality embryos with minimum number of Oocytes. In this case the need to hyper stimulate does not arise and hence the endometrial mileu need not be taken to a supraphysiological state and hence most cycles can give good results with fresh transfers provided there are no other complications with the endometrium.
The cost of vitrification, thawing and the delay in cycles too can be avoided.

A good quality IVF lab with a skilled embryologist and an excellent fertilisation, cleavage and blastocyst rates can go a long way in avoiding freeze all cycles and the excess of cost of freezing, thawing and undue stress to the patients.

Producing semen sample for Semen Analysis or any Fertility treatment can be worrisome for a male partner. Usually in a Fertility Clinic or a lab, a private room or, in many places, a restroom is set aside for semen collection. A new environment and the anxiety of the results may make a person uncomfortable.

In such situations, semen collection at home could be a better option. But transporting the collected semen from home to the fertility clinic or a lab might pose a challenge, as the sample needs to be transported at an optimum temperature. Variation in temperature, both high or low, could result in abnormal test results. Accurate reporting is very essential as the course of treatment is very much dependent on semen parameters. Due to these reasons, patients are often advised to carry the collected semen container close to the body during transport causing discomfort.
