LANDMARK DAY AT CSL -
LAUNCHING OF FIVE VESSELS AT ONE GO & KEEL LAYING OF TWO VESSELS

It was a landmark day at Cochin Shipyard Ltd (CSL) as it launched five (05) vessels at one go from its Building Dock at Kochi and also laid the keel for two (02) vessels. The vessels launched are two 8000 DWT Mini General Cargo Ships for JSW Shipping & Logistics Pvt Ltd and three Floating Border Outpost Vessels (FBOP) for the Indian Border Security Force. Keel laying was carried out for two more 8000 DWT Mini General Cargo Ships for JSW Shipping & Logistics Pvt Ltd. CSL achieved this milestone amidst the COVID -19 pandemic by working with available resources with necessary precautions.

The five (05) vessels were launched by Smt Rameetha K, Scientist ‘G’, NPOL (DRDO) wife of Shri Madhu S Nair, CMD, CSL, while Shri Pranab K Jha, VP JSW Shipping and Shri Madhu S Nair, CMD, CSL, did the honours of keel laying for the two (02) new vessels in the presence of Shri Sureshbabu NV, Director(Operations), Shri Bejoy Bhasker, Director(Technical), Shri Jose VJ, Director(Finance) and other officials.

The Mini General Cargo Ships launched today are part of a series of four similar ships being built for the JSW group. These vessels are built and classed under the standards of Indian Register of Shipping. These ships will be used for transportation of dry bulk cargo such as coal, iron ore, dolomite, and limestone. The vessels, with a length of 122 Mtr and height of 7.20 Mtr and speed of 10 knots, will have a compliment of 16 crew. These ships are expected to ply on the Coastal route between Jaigarh Port and Dolvi Steel Plant in river Amba near Dharamtar Port. This programme, once implemented, would trigger one of the largest inland water transport cargo movements in India, which is in line with the Government of India’s vision for the development of the National Waterways.

The three FBOP’s, with a length of 46 Mtr, launched today are part of a series of nine vessels being built for the Water Wing of the Border Security Force. These vessels are designed in-house by CSL & classed by Indian Register of Shipping. Each FBOP is designed with stowage arrangements for four fast patrol boats, which can be launched and hoisted using its own davit system. The vessels will act as a floating base for the flotilla of fast patrol boats and will supply Petrol, Fresh Water and provisions to the smaller boats and are to be deployed on India’s Eastern & Western borders.

CSL is expanding geographically and has commenced Ship Repair Units at Mumbai, Kolkata & Port Blair in addition to its Kochi facilities. CSL is also setting up fully owned subsidiary shipyards at Kolkata (named HCSL) and at Malpe, Karnataka (named TEBMA Shipyards Limited) to cater to the construction of small & medium vessels as well as inland water vessels.

CSL is also augmenting its infrastructure in Kochi and is currently investing around ₹2,800 Crore in the construction of a new 310 M long dry dock at CSL and a ship lift based Ship Repair Yard at Willingdon Island, Kochi.

CSL- the first Green Company in shipping sector to bag “GREENCO”Award under the Ministry of Shipping (MoS)

Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), a PSE under the Ministry of Shipping, Govt. of India has earned the distinction of becoming the first company in the Shipping sector to be certified by Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) for the Green Co Silver rating . CSL has now joined the handful of big companies like IOCL, HPCL, BPCL, ONGC, GAIL, Indian Railway (units at ICF) which have already been certified. This certification is considered ‘very special’, as it was obtained in a pandemic Covid19 situation and the process was completed in a short time.
“Greenco” rating is awarded to a company meets set norms in implementation of ‘Green’ environment friendly facets in their production activities, conserve and is persistently endeavouring to move towards greener renewable energies like solar/wind etc.. The award is based on performance evaluation of the Company under various parameters such as Energy Efficiency, Water Conservation, Renewable Energy, Green House Gas Emission, Waste Management, Material Conservation, Recycling and Recyclability, Green Supply Chain, Product Stewardship & Life Cycle Assessment, Innovation for Environment, Green Infrastructure and Ecology.
That CSL could achieve the Level-3 Silver Rating at the outset is considered as a great achievement for the Company.
The Green Co rating certificate was awarded to CSL at the CII GreenCo Rating Award Ceremony (Virtual Event) during the 9th Edition of GreenCo Summit 2020 on 07th Oct.2020, on the CII HIVE Virtual Platform.
The GreenCo silver rating will boost CSL’s effort at achieving world class competitiveness and provides new opportunities for cost reduction, enhances the Company’s Corporate Green image, credibility & also creates transparency among stakeholders. The GreenCo silver rating is also expected to pave the way for CSL to put up a strong long-term roadmap for ecologically sustainable business growth.

COCHIN SHIPYARD LIMITED SIGNS CONTRACT FOR CONSTRUCTION OF
AUTONOMOUS ELECTRIC VESSELS FOR ASKO MARITIME AS, NORWAY

Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), Kochi signed contracts for construction and supply of Two (2) nos Autonomous Electric Ferry for ASKO Maritime AS, Norway with an option to build 2 more identical vessels.

2. CSL is the largest commercial shipbuilder in India. The company clinched this prestigious export order from ASKO Maritime AS, the subsidiary group of Norges Gruppen ASA, one of the largest players in the Norwegian retail segment.

3. This Autonomous Electrical vessel project is an ambitious project in Norway partially funded by the Norwegian Government aimed at emission-free transport of goods across the Oslo fjord. These vessels will be managed by M/s. Massterly AS, the first company setup to take technical management and operate autonomous vessels, a joint venture between M/s. Kongsberg, the world leader in autonomous technology and M/s. Wilhelmsen, one of the largest Maritime shipping companies. Once in operation, this vessel will create a new bench mark for the merchant shipping world in the field of Autonomous Vessels with Zero Carbon Emission.

4. The 67 Mtr long vessels will initially be delivered as a Full-Electric Transport Ferry, powered by 1846 kWh capacity battery. After commissioning of autonomous equipment and field trials in Norway, it will operate as a fully autonomous ferry of ASKO that can transport 16 fully loaded Standard EU trailers in one go across the fjords. The Vessels are designed by Naval Dynamics Norway using Kongsberg Maritime systems, with detailed engineering to be carried out by CSL. They will be built under DNV GL Classification and flagged in Norway.

5. CSL won this export order after detailed evaluation of various global shipyards and based on its value proposition to the customer. CSL’s proven capability & track record to deliver world quality high-end vessels to prestigious clients in Western Europe also found favour with the Client. CSL holds this Contract, obtained within the current constraints posed by the pandemic, in high significance. CSL is already constructing 23 Hybrid Electric boats for the Kochi Water Metro.

6. This project is expected to catapult CSL into the league of premier Shipbuilding yards in the world capable of handling high tech vessel construction.
