Kid's First Dental Appointment and We are both terrified.

Congrats to you for doing the most important step by making an appointment! You have done your research and now it’s here. The biggest thing to remember is that pediatric dentists are trained to work with children of all ages and children with special needs. They are in great hands when it comes to their dental care. Most dental offices have tours or photos of their office on their websites if you would like to familiarize your child with the setup prior to arrival. We recommend to keep a positive attitude before the appointment by letting your child bring their favorite stuffed animal, pick their favorite songs to play on the car ride over or to incentivize the appointment with a small treat later. The next appointment should be much easier after they have introduced themselves with the dentist, staff and office.

This is particularly true in the practice of dentistry for children, where the behavior of the child in the dental chair often determines what procedure the dentist can use—or even whether he can treat the child at all! It is imperative, therefore, for the pedodontist to understand the child's psychological and emotional development, as he now understands his physical growth and development, if he is to deal successfully with the child's dental problems.

Children can be managed in various ways: forcefully and authoritatively (i.e., to subdue the child and force him to accept the demands of dental treatment), or by understanding his needs and leading him to accept dental procedures. The latter is an active learning process which promotes his emotional growth and development instead of blocking it.

Nitrous oxide (N2O), more commonly referred to as laughing gas, is a mild sedative agent that safely and effectively manages pain and anxiety during dental treatment. The colorless and odorless nitrous oxide is mixed with oxygen and inhaled through a small mask that fits over your nose. Patients are asked to breathe normally and should feel the effects of the laughing gas within minutes.

Contrary to its name, laughing gas does not necessarily make you laugh. The nitrous oxide slows down your nervous system to make you feel less inhibited. You may feel light-headed, tingly, or even heaviness in your arms or legs. Ultimately, you should be calm and comfortable throughout the procedure. You might even giggle a time or two.
