Revit is a Software Application that has gained huge popularity amongst Civil Engineers & Architects. While it has a vast range of features and toolsets, it falls short when it comes to creating complex Geometries & performing repetitive tasks. Here, Dynamo can be highly useful and can take care of these shortcomings. Dynamo, which can be used with Revit as well as Civil 3D, is a visual programming tool that enhances the power of Revit & Civil 3D applications. It can be super useful in:
1. Creating complex & innovative Geometries/ Structures like the 83 Storey high Ocean Heights tower of Dubai, the Twister at Amager Strandpark in Copenhagen, Liege-Guillemins Station, Liège, Belgium, or the Marina Bay Sands, Singapore, etc.
2. Automating repetitive tasks which otherwise would consume a lot of precious time if working solely on Revit or Civil 3D
3. Carrying out simulation & performance analysis of your model
4. Better & faster communication of data
The beauty of Dynamo is that even the Civil Engineers & Architects who are not into coding can create & run programs in a graphical & visual manner which makes the process a whole lot easier. Using the system of Nodes & Wires, a lot of complex tasks can be simplified & Dynamo contains a huge Library of Nodes to use for this purpose. There is a big community of Dynamo users too that is regularly contributing to this Library.
So, to sum it up, if the Civil Engineers & Architects wish to take their Revit/ Civil- 3D game to the next level, Dynamo is a must-learn tool that should definitely be in their Portfolio....

Drought in Civil Engineering Placements:
It is raining jobs in the IT sector; so, the 'soon would be' Engineering Graduates from the CS, IT & other compatible domains are seeing a boom in the Campus Placements and are benefiting from it too. With resignations & job-hopping being at a record high, the Engineering Colleges are getting a lot of inbound interest from the IT Companies even with little effort. But what about the Civil Engineering Stream? What are the prospects for them? Have a look at the website of any Engineering College & scan the Placement Data, you will be surprised to see that out of an impressive number of Placements mentioned over there, just a couple or so are related to the Civil Engineering Branch, and that too mostly in an IT Role, not for the Core domain. Wouldn't it be sad as well as a waste of talent for any youngster having a real passion for Civil Engineering to be forced to work in an IT Role?
If we want Civil Engineering to flourish as a Branch in general and not just be monopolized by the IITs & top rung NITs, we need to focus on the quality of the passing out Civil Engineers in terms of Industry aligned skilling, field relevant training, modern technological proficiency, and Day 1 job readiness. The process to achieve this should start right from the Third Semester itself so that by the time the students graduate, together with the excellent academic training, they would have already achieved Expert Level proficiency and also created a Portfolio to showcase their skills. Once this is done, with properly planned aggressive outbound content marketing, we can for sure see a lot of organic interest for Campus Placement Drives in the Civil Engineering domain also.

Let's make ourselves valuable first of all....
Revit Model Checker is a free PlugIn from Autodesk that automatically checks your Revit Model based on defined BIM requirements. It also generates a compliance Report elaborating upon all the inconsistencies & errors. One can use any out of the several pre- built & tested check- sets bundled with it and even customize the said check- sets. Reports may be run in a Revit model directly giving you the ability to check the compliances therein. Directly navigating to the non- compliant elements is possible through the Report itself. You can track single or multiple Revit Projects at a time.

Attention Civil Engineers & Project Managers !!
Microsoft Project or Primavera P6 ??
When it comes to the use of modern Project Management Tools in the Construction Industry, India doesn’t seem to have anything commendable to present. Organizations, whether Government or Private, have been very slow to adapt to the worldwide trends in this regard. However, slowly & gradually, with Private players leading the trend, we have been catching up albeit at a slow pace. However, when we talk to fresh Engineers or even experienced professionals who have just started getting interested in these applications, we see that there exists a lot of confusion and most of them are at a complete loss to figure out which Software Application to focus upon. The decision is crucial because apart from the cost to be invested in the Licenses, the cost to be incurred in terms of time and money to learn the Applications is also significant.
The major tools being used across the countries are Microsoft Project, Primavera P6, Asta Power Project & Trimble Tilos. While Tilos is an excellent alternative to use for Linear Project Management, the last two are commonly not in use in India in any significant manner. The majority of Companies or individuals in India either go for MS Project or Primavera but even in case of these two applications, a lot of questions are there which the prospective users would like to be answered. To find a solution to the conundrum, we should go through the major differences that exist between the two applications. These are:
1. Primavera works with a Database while MS Project is file based
2. Primavera has features to record Thresholds, Risks & Issues which are missing in MS Project
3. Primavera supports multiple baselines while MS Project has place for 11 baselines only
4. We can create a Project Website in Primavera where we can display the Risks, Issues & Resources etc. while MS Project lacks this feature
5. Primavera allows a separate view for WBS (Work Breakdown Structure) where Activities/ Tasks may be added while in MS Project, the Activities by itself are made to appear in a WBS format
6. Primavera can support a substantially higher number of Activities in comparison to MS Project. It doesn’t make a huge difference though in case of small to medium sized Projects
7. Primavera provides a Progress Spotlight feature which is lacking in MS Project. However this functionality can somewhat be worked around by creating appropriate Filters in MS Project
8. Primavera allows us to break a Task into Steps while this feature is not available in MS Project
9. Primavera allows more than one type of Relationship between Tasks while MS Project is limited to a Single type of Dependency
10. Most users find it easier to learn MS Project due to its similarity to other Microsoft Products like Excel. On the other hand, while it should not be quite difficult to learn Primavera too, new users consider it difficult just because of the perception existing in the domain
11. Primavera is mostly being used in developed nations, the Middle East & by big Corporate Groups abroad as well as in India while MS Project is the go to tool for Small & Medium businesses. However, with perceptions changing rapidly, Primavera is slowly and gradually catching up with MS Project in terms of usage within the smaller Project environments too
12. In addition to the above mentioned points, there are other minor differences too in terms of features such as Multiple- user accessibility and installation etc.
Now, what is the conclusion that a prospective learner should arrive at after going through the above mentioned differences? In my opinion, it would be better to start with MS Project and get accustomed to the Software environment. Once you have reached an intermediate level in it, you may decide to start learning & practicing Primavera as well. This is because keeping in view the prevalence of Primavera use in major Countries around the world; the time is not far when it would become equally popular in India as well. The knowledge and functional proficiency in both of these Applications can definitely boost the employability of aspiring Engineers, Project Managers & related Professionals
This post is specially for Civil Engineering Graduates & Diploma Holders from India..
Diploma Engineers with 3 Years of Work Experience & Civil Engineering Graduates can get get themselves registered with the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) as Contractors without fulfilling any complex prequalification requirements. They would not need to submit any Net Worth Certificate, Banker's Certificate or Average Annual Turnover Certificate which the non Engineering background Applicants usually have to produce before their application for Registration is considered. The application Fee for the same is a meagre amount of INR 3000.00 only.
Such Engineers/ Architects will be able to secure a Registration under Class- V having an eligibility to participate in Bids up to INR 40.00 Lacs for relevant Civil Works. Once they successfully complete the requisite number of such Work Contracts, they may get themselves upgraded to the next highest Class of Registration which shall make them eligible for participation in Bids of higher value.
The process may be explored in detail @ https://cpwdpims.nic.in/enlistment/ and the Enlistment rules may be downloaded as a PDF Document fromhttps://cpwdpims.nic.in/enlistment/Writereaddata/EnlistmentRules/Enlistment2020.pdf

Attention aspiring & working Civil Engineers from the Water Supply Domain:
OpenFlows WaterGEMS from Bentley Systems is an excellent Water Distribution Analysis and Design Software which has become an integral part of the Water Supply Professionals' arsenal in the modern age. It is a superset of WaterCAD and has a few additional modules like Pipe Renewal Planner, Skelebrator & Darwin Designer etc. which are not there in WaterCAD. WaterGEMS also has the ability to integrate with three platforms; ArcGIS, Bentley MicroStation and AutoDesk AutoCAD.
Thus, anyone who learns WaterGEMS can work in the WaterCAD Application quite comfortably. However, even starting with the latter could be a good idea & the knowledge of remaining modules which are there in WaterGEMS can be added on with time as one becomes confident in the primary tools. A sound working knowledge of the Application is bound to open the doors to a lot of opportunities with very little competition.

Using InfraWorks, Civil 3D & Revit together:
Software Applications related to Civil Engineering & Construction Domain are not something that are to be used individually in isolation. In fact, most of the complex situations demand a collaborative use of a combination of these. For example, if you need to insert a Terrace Layout within a real world topography, InfraWorks could be a suitable choice for the same. However in case you also need to carry out the earthwork calculations & optimization for the same Project, integrating the InfraWorks data with Civil 3D would be required. In addition, if you also need to merge a planned Structure say a Retaining Wall or a Building into this Model for the purpose of positioning, realistic visualization & presentation, introducing a Modelling Application such as Revit into the equation would also become necessary. A proper & precise integration of the three would lead to the perfect Engineering Solution.

Hey Civil Engineers; what do you do when all around you, wherever you look, you find each & every Civil Engineer rushing to learn Revit.
But wait, as a Civil Engineer, are you learning it the right way ? Revit has three main modules; Architecture, Structure & MEP.
Unfortunately, most of the aspiring Civil Engineers put all their energy into learning Revit Architecture only. Being able to create realistic 3D views or Walk-throughs may look awesome, but it's not the only thing that Civil Engineers should feel proud of. In fact, it is something that is more relevant to Architects & Draughtsman. It becomes only when clubbed with the appropriate knowledge of Revit Structure & MEP modules & the capability to collaborate between the three. In fact, when you find every Civil Engineer around you generating amazing 3D views in Revit Architecture, you should also think of the problem of less demand & excess supply of professionals skilled to do that. To beat the Competition, you need to think futuristically. But how?
Enter BIM, or Building Information Modelling. Having the right & proper knowledge of BIM will propel you to a different league where doors to high end jobs, consultancy opportunities & freelance assignments will be open to you aplenty.
Greetings to all fellow Uttarakhandis.... This Page has been created to lend a voice to us, the common folk of Uttarakhand. However, the tone of the posts is intended to be completely apolitical, non religious, non cast oriented as well as logical.
Our sole purpose is to provide an outlet to the common folk of Uttarakhand to vent their feelings & to raise issues related to the problems faced by them with respect to civic concerns. The followers are requested to adhere to the following policies or the posts are not going to be allowed to be shared:
1. No criticism of any politician from any party or even an independent politician ?
Why ? Because if we do so, instead of our posts getting the due attention in the right context, the discussion would be led to a different direction leading to irrelevant debate and avoidable controversy. We need to preempt that possibility & stick to the core issues
2. No clear mention of names; we are hear to raise flags about the problems, not the reasons or persons behind them. We are of the opinion that the followers to this page would be intelligent enough to understand that who is responsible; irrespective of whether we mention the names or not ?
Why ? Again, we are experienced enough to understand that as soon as we start naming & shaming, the discussion is going to be steered in a different direction & the core issue would be lost in the process. We need to keep the core issue highlighted & the debate to be focused on the subject without letting the manipulators to hijack it
3. Now, the question arises that while we abstain from criticism, should we give due credit & positive publicity to people, political figures or officials who are doing commendable work in their respective fields ?
Sadly, in our opinion, no....
Why ? Because very soon, we will see a volley of praises & compliments out of which it would be almost impossible to w**d out the fake ones. As such, it would be a good idea to avoid any possibility of biased content. Instead, it would be much better to just post the details, pictures & videos related to commendable works without mentioning any person & we suppose that the audience will be intelligent enough to separate the wheat from the chaff
4. We also want to make it clear that we won't be accepting any paid advertising in this Platform no matter what the economic implications ?
Why ? Because we understand that for this Page to remain totally unbiased & impartial, it is necessary that we remain absolutely un- obliged to any person or organization
5. Only posts from those members shall be allowed who have a genuine Profile with their real pictures. Fake looking Profiles having Pictures of animals, objects or public figures shall not be allowed to share their posts
6. Members posting Text, Images or Videos in this Page are requested to check the authenticity & genuineness of the posted material before sharing it on this Page. They are also expected to make sure that any content posted on this Page does not have any hints of Violence, S*x, unlawful activities etc. Members will themselves be responsible for such Page activities
7. Abusive Language is a strict no- no. All discussions & debates should be held in a healthy environment
Now, a short description about the need to start this FB Page:
In the words of Simon Sinek, the legendary Author & Visionary, every important mission or endeavor in this world should be started with a 'WHY' behind it.. So, what is our 'Why' behind initiating this page ?
We share the List hereunder, though it is not exhaustive & comprehensive ; suggestions to add to it are welcome (Members may post with the Hashtag & we shall be glad to add it to the List after due scrutiny & moderation):
1. Do you feel that the genuine Taxpayers in our Country are being Short- changed ?
2. Do you feel that for any Senior Citizen or a differently abled person, it is almost impossible to cross the streets in Dehradun particularly during the rush hours ? While it is a simple issue that could have been very easy to tackle with the help of proper Zebra Crossings equipped with CCTV Cameras; it is something that has been completely neglected only because our Policy makers either do not have elders who need to cross the streets or even if they have such family members, they have the privilege of escorts & support staff following them whenever needed because of which they fail to empathize with the plight of thousands of elderly commoners facing this problem.
3. Do you feel that it is totally inconsiderate to create barricades & hurdles on public roads during the Assembly Sessions ? Wouldn't it have been more prudent to find out a better & long lasting alternative to this ?
4. Do you feel that after years & years of deliberations & discussions upon 'Metro Rail', 'Sky Rail', 'Pods' & 'Ropeways'; it is high time that a suitable Public Transportation System should be there to take care of the rising problems of Traffic Congestion, Pollution & Connectivity in Dehradun ?
5. Do you feel that the 'Dehradun Smart City' Project should finally become really 'Smart' ?
6. Do you also feel that we have the right to see our beloved City as developed and as livable as any other decent city in any civilized & developed Country ?
7. Do you also feel that it is high time that our beloved City gets rid of the menace of haphazard & unsystematic development caused by the policies of MDDA ?
8. Do you feel that it is the right time for the common folk to have a direct say and participation in the development & operation of better health & education infrastructure so that each & every citizen has access to World class fundamental essential services at 'No Profit & No Loss/ Cost to cost basis'
Thank You....
Together, we shall win ........

Autodesk NavisWorks- An amazing tool for Construction Professionals:
Navisworks in itself is not a Modelling Application. However it brings Models created in different Applications into a common environment to help navigate, collaborate, measure & analyze as a unified Project. While working in Projects, different teams use different Software Applications for a variety of purposes. E.g., the Models might be created using Revit, SketchUp or MicroStation; the Steel Structures might have been done using Tekla & the MEP Sub- Contractors might have used AutoCAD or Revit MEP. In such a scenario, NavisWorks brings together all of these into a single Platform as a unified Model. Its salient features are:
1. Converting large Revit 3D Models into smaller files that are information rich & easier to manage
2. Entire 3D model can be viewed & walked through
3. Sections can be isolated enabling quicker analysis in comparison to Revit
4. Clients may download & use free NavisWorks File Viewer where they may rotate, spin, flip or walk through the model
5. Generate 3D views of the project, take basic measurements & interact with the design team in a 3D environment
6. Powerful Clash Detection Capabilities
7. Effective use of Filters & Searches
