Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal, who are not related, founded Flipkart in 2007. Both of them are graduates from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. At the time of its founding, Flipkart was an online bookstore, and the idea came to the founders when they struggled to find a particular book they were looking for in the Indian market.

Initially, Sachin and Binny started Flipkart as a part-time project while they were working for Amazon India. They began by renting out a small apartment in Bangalore and started the business with just two laptops and a few books. They would personally deliver the books to customers, sometimes on their bikes, and collect cash on delivery.

Gradually, Flipkart gained traction, and the company started to grow. They expanded their product offerings beyond books, adding music, movies, and other categories. They also launched their own logistics arm, eKart, to better manage their deliveries.

Flipkart's growth trajectory continued, and the company raised several rounds of funding from investors like Tiger Global and Accel Partners. In 2012, Flipkart made its foray into the fashion segment by acquiring the online fashion retailer Myntra.

Over the years, Flipkart continued to innovate and expand its operations. The company became one of the largest ecommerce players in India, offering a wide range of products, including electronics, fashion, groceries, and more. In 2018, Flipkart was acquired by Walmart for $16 billion, marking the largest ecommerce acquisition in the world.

Sachin Bansal left Flipkart after the acquisition, while Binny Bansal continued to be associated with the company for a while. However, he too eventually left Flipkart amidst controversy. Despite the challenges, Flipkart remains one of the most successful ecommerce companies in India and has paved the way for other startups to follow.
