In the Saiva Siddhanta tradition, the disciple goes through initiations (diksha) described in the text, Somaśambhupaddhati. The second initiation, called nirvana diksha, is said to ensure liberation.

This is how it is described (the steps below are added by me, for easy reference); after the required preparation –
Step 1 – the Guru (symbolically) enters the disciple’s body, through the crown and goes down to the heart.
Step 2 – from the heart, the Guru takes the disciple’s soul and takes it up to the crown and out of the body.
Step 3 – the Guru then takes the disciple’s soul into his own body, into his crown, down to his heart and then releases the disciple’s soul back out of his (the Guru’s) crown.
Step 4 – the disciple’s soul is then placed in the central energy channel (in the body of the disciple).

What do you make of this? It is not a literal description, it is said to be symbolic.

Step 1 could be symbolic of the Guru blessing the disciple, and the descent of divine energy from the crown chakra to the heart chakra of the disciple. The soul of the disciple in the heart could be a reference to the physical permanent seed.

Step 2 could be a form of Twin Hearts Meditation, focusing on the heart chakra and then the crown chakra. GMCKS said that in some traditions, the disciple imagines the Guru in his heart and then in the crown.

It could also be a symbolic way of describing the building of the antahkarana (in some teachings, the building of the antahkarana is said to begin from the heart to the crown and then up to the higher soul).

Step 3 what do you think this could mean? The merging of the consciousness of the disciple with the Guru? A shaktipat where the disciple experiences oneness with the Guru?

Step 4 seems to be a reference to the sushumna. GMCKS says the sushumna is actually in the centre of the body, it is the central energy channel. This is where the 3 permanent seeds are said to be located including the physical permanent seed.

Perhaps this is also symbolic of the opening of the layers of the sushumna with the blessings of the Guru? It is through the opening of the sushumna that the kundalini is awakened, which is necessary to achieve liberation.

As GMCKS said in one of his talks, "SECRETS of SECRETS!"
