Do we use a mesh to repair all hernia? |KNOWING THE BASICS | Hernia repair | Dr Anushtup De 12/04/2024

Do we use a mesh to repair all hernia?
This is a very common question in the minds of patients.
In almost all hernia repair we use a mesh. However there are a few situations we do not use a mesh to repair the hernia.
1. Conge***al Hernia - New born and Children
2. Complicated Hernia - where the contents have become infected or gangrenous/ dead. Usually such patients require EMERGENCY SURGERY and the dead and infective tissues have to be removed. In the presence or if there is any doubt of infection , Mesh is never placed. They will possibly require mesh placement at a later date in most cases.
This is the reason why it is preferable to undergo a planned eletive surgery for hernia when it is diagnosed and before it becomes complicated.

6 WAYS YOU CAN CONTRIBUTE ON CANCER AWARENESS

Research has shown that more than 40% of all cancers diagnosed and nearly half of all deaths from cancer can be attributed to preventable causes like smoking, excessive weight, lifestyle issues, sun exposure, etc. It is important to know that Understanding risk factors and by taking adequate precautions can significantly help to decrease the risk of developing cancers.
February marks the National Cancer Prevention Month and 4 th February marks World Cancer Day with this specific aim to educate people about the steps they can take to spread awareness about cancer , help reduce cancer risk and maintain a healthier, longer life.
So, here are 6 ways you can contribute to the cause of cancer awareness and prevention:

1. Educate yourself
The first step in the prevention or cure of any disease is to understand the basics facts and educating yourself about its fundamental aspects. Prevention begins with awareness.
Being well informed will allow you to ask the right questions and discuss the aspects of preventive care with the healthcare professional. This in turn will empower you to make the right decisions for you and your family in consultation with your doctor.

2. Make lifestyle changes
A healthy diet that includes fruits and vegetables rich in cancer-preventing bioactive compounds can help to reduce risk for colon, breast, and other cancers.
Maintaining a healthy and proper weight through physical activity and healthy eating reduces your risk for cancer. Overweight and obesity are known to be associated with at least 13 types of cancer, including endometrial (uterine), breast, and colorectal cancer.
Limit processed meats, alcohol, sugary drinks, and highly processed foods. Risk of cancer increases with the amount of alcohol consumed.

3. Know your family history
It is important to know that 5 – 10 % of all cancers are inherited. If you know and understand your family history, you can help and guide your physician when you discuss regarding cancer screening and whether to consider for genetic counselling.

4. Get screened regularly
Regular screenings help detect cancers early and maximize your chance for successful treatment.
Almost every type of cancer has a recommended screening test. Once you reach certain ages, there are specific recommendation for screening tests for cancers which may be annually or every 2 – 3 years.
For example
· Women between the ages of 40-75 are encouraged to get a mammogram every one or two years to detect early signs of breast cancer.
· Adults between the ages of 45 to 75 are encouraged to get colorectal screening for colon cancer.
· Women ages 21 to 65 years are encouraged to get screened for cervical cancer via a Pap smear every 2-3 years.

5. Get vaccinated
The development of some cancers can be prevented by appropriate vaccination. Such measures may not completely prevent the development of cancer, but may reduce the risk significantly. It is very important to take vaccination at the recommended age and time schedule to get the maximum benefit.
The Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine can significantly decrease the risk of several cancers including cervical, throat, tongue, a**l, and other ge***al cancers. Studies have shown that the vaccine provides close to 100% protection against infections and pre-cancers caused by certain types of HPV.
The Hepatitis B vaccine decreases the risk for liver cancer. A safe and effective vaccine that offers 98% to 100% protection against hepatitis B is available.

6. Spead awareness
Educating your family and friends, informing the public and supporting a cause may go a long way in spreading awareness regarding cancer prevention. Medical fraternity and Cancer survivors can educate people about the importance of regular screenings and prompt medical attention for potential symptoms.
They can help dispel common myths or fears associated with cancer screenings, encouraging individuals to overcome their reservations and prioritize their health. Survivors can collaborate with healthcare organizations, participate in awareness campaigns, or share informative resources to ensure that people understand the benefits of early detection and the available screening options.
