What Is Self-Care? And the Most Practical, Enjoyable Ideas for Weaving It Into Your Life 29/10/2021

If you are a welfare worker, you are much aware of the trauma that you experience by watching suffering of other people / beings, day in and day out. It is not easy to do the work you do.
If you are a volunteer rescuer worker, then it is even more tough as you are doing this work not because you are paid for it, but because you believe that this work needs to be done urgently and someone has to do it.
Rescue and welfare work is done at the cost of your time, energy and mental peace. It causes you pain and suffering, but you continue on the path. You are a remarkable person. This message is to remind you that you are valuable and your efforts are bringing a lot of positive change. Your suffering is evolving the society and strengthening the cause you are fighting for.
But you need to take care of yourself. You need to be compassionate towards yourself. You need to stop blaming yourself for every failure, cause in rescue and welfare work, there are many failures and less successes. Resources are less with you, but you struggle on. An interesting write-up which gives some ideas: https://parade.com/1039023/allisonscerbomusante/what-is-self-care/

What Is Self-Care? And the Most Practical, Enjoyable Ideas for Weaving It Into Your Life The phrase “self-care” is a popular one, and conjures up images of luxurious bubble baths with a glass of wine or hour-long meditation sessions. Self-care has long been misunderstood in many ways, perhaps a mantra reserved for yoga-doers, an indulgent brushing aside of responsibilities or as the...

All we ever had was this moment. Let us fill each breath with gratitude for the moments that we have.
We will forever exist but all we will have is one moment at a time.
You will forever be with those you have loved. Each of us is a god-being playing the role of who you are in this lifetime. Each of us forms a larger consciousness that manifested everyone and everything.
Fear not the illnesses that surround us. Be careful for your loved ones. But remember that you are forver and so is everyone and everything.

Rescue, welfare and healthcare workers experience a level of stress that is not common in other professions. These workers are directly dealing with life & death situations in almost a daily basis. It is easy to get overwhelmed and adapt the emotional state of the victim being handled at hand. So for example the victim is a burn victim going through a lot of pain - emotional and physical, it is natural for an empathetic worker to also experience the same level of pain in some or the other form. So now the worker is dealing with two things - firstly, helping the victim medically and emotionally, while at the same time also experiencing the same intensity of pain themselves. This is a prominent cause of compassion burnout or fatigue. Therefore, we rescue, welfare and healthcare workers, need to incorporate training into our work to help us heal from these negativities.
Mindfunesses is a proven technique to bring more resilience into people while also helping workers detach their emotional state. Workers need to feel fully positive and be in excellent emotional state before they can help others. This is something to think about.

Fits of rage are common in rescuers, caregivers and welfare workers. This rage can be felt towards the subject of your care giving or towards someone or something you momentarily deal with. Remember while it is okay to feel angry, you need to disconnect from the situation to ensure you do not act it out. Most times the anger reaction is more extreme than the situation at hand can justify. This is due to pent up stress or frustration. If you are experiencing sudden bursts of anger then you need to take a break and reconnect with yourself. A break can be something simple as getting a massage or getting a coffee with a friend who can listen and provide perspective. Irrespective of how demanding your rescuer or caregiver role is, you need to consistently take breaks and do something that will help you relax.
