Wishing everyone a Happy World Elephant day - August 12, 2023.
The day is celebrated to create awareness about conservation issues related to elephants, the largest living land mammal on planet Earth. Elephants are also called the 'Lord of the Jungle', as they create pathways used by all denizens of the wild. They have large brains and have immense memories, which the matriarch uses to take the herd to the best feeding areas and waterholes round the year.
In general, the Asian elephant is smaller than the African bush elephant and has the highest body point on the head. The back is convex or level. The ears are small, with dorsal borders folded laterally. The feet have five nail-like structures on each forefoot, and four on each hind foot. The forehead has two hemispherical bulges, unlike the flat front of the African elephants. Its long trunk or proboscis has only one fingerlike tip, in contrast to the African elephants which have two.Hence the Asian species relies more on wrapping around a food item and squeezing it into its mouth, rather than grasping with the tip. Asian elephants have more muscle coordination and can perform more complex tasks. In African elephants, both male and females have tusks, unlike in Asian elephants where males have tusks. In fact, few males also don't have tusk, are referred to as ' Makhna'.
displacement of elephants.
The biggest challenges elephants in India face are the destruction of forests through logging, encroachment, slash-and-burn/ shifting cultivation, and monoculture tree plantations(in the south and Northeast). Human–elephant conflicts occur when elephants raid crops in areas closer to forest due to encroachment or on the tract of farmlands that lie in their traditional migration routes.
The theme for World Elephant Day 2023 is “Ending the Illegal Wildlife Trade."" This theme highlights the importance of stopping the illegal trade in elephant ivory and other animal products.
India is home to 60% of wild Asiatic elephants and the schedule I specie is also recognized as 'National Heritage animal', due to it being an intricate part of history and culture of India. The most reverred animal (akin to Lord Ganesha), needs our help and magnanimity to let their population grow.
