At least 20 people died and over 300 others sustained injuries after a 5.6 magnitude earthquake jolted Indonesia's main Island of Java for several seconds on Monday (November 21) afternoon.

According to news agency Reuters, Herman Suherman, a government official from Cianjur, the town in West Java where the epicentre of the quake was located, told news channel MetroTV that up to 20 people had died at one hospital in the area.

According to the US Geological Survey, the quake was centered in the Cianjur region in West Java province, a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles).

Local officials in Cianjur district said dozens of buildings, including houses, were damaged.

The quake was strongly felt in the greater Jakarta area.

NEWS | 2 Earthquakes Jolt Northeast And Nearby Areas

Two hit Northeastern states and neighbouring country of in the wee hours of September 30.

The first tremor of magnitude 5.2 was felt around 3:52 AM in , and nearby areas. The epicenter was at a depth of 140 km, 162 km northwest of Myanmar (Burma).

Further, another jolt of magnitude 3.8 at around 7:53 AM was felt with the epicenter at Kamjong in Manipur.

Due to poor workmanship and quality of materials used, the residents of Nayan apartment , situated in Japorigog, Guwahati were living in a very risky condition. The strength of their building was less than 50% of the minimum required standard, there were cracks being formed in most columns, and the next Earthquake could have been fatal.
