Nagaland, the heavenly land tucked away in the corner of India’s Northeast is predominantly inhabited by the brave warrior Naga tribes belonging to Indo-Mongoloid stock. There are 32 sub-tribes, 16 major and numerous sub-tribes.
The main tribes include the Angamis, the Semas, Konyaks, Aos and the Rengmas, each of them having their own distinct culture, lifestyles and effective system of self-governance since time immemorial. During the 19th century, the region came under British Administration. After independence, it was made a centrally administered area in 1957, administered by the Governor of Assam and was named as the Naga Hills Tuensang Area. In 1961, it was renamed as Nagaland and became a State of the Indian Union, which was formally inaugurated on 1st December 1963.
Nagaland shares its border with Assam in the North and West, Myanmar and Arunachal Pradesh in the East and Manipur in the South. The topography of the state is nearly all hilly, the highest peak being Saramati (3841m) in the district of Kiphire. Many rivers cut through this mountainous terrain, like sharp swords slicing through rocks, the main ones being Dhansiri, Doyang, Dikhu, Milak, Tizu and Zungki.
