In a vibrant display of enthusiasm and commitment to a healthier and cleaner nation, the students of Department of Biotechnology, Haldia Institute of Technology actively participated in the Fit India Swachhata Freedom Run 4.0 held on 10th October, 2023. With great zeal, they joined this national movement to promote fitness, cleanliness, and the spirit of freedom. This run, commemorating India's rich history and the legacy of freedom fighters, served as a powerful reminder of the importance of physical fitness and environmental cleanliness. Our students, deeply committed to the cause, ran with a sense of purpose, embracing the values of health and cleanliness. Their active involvement in this event not only exemplifies their dedication to personal well-being but also reinforces their sense of responsibility toward a cleaner and greener India. By participating in the Fit India Swachhata Freedom Run 4.0, they have contributed to the national mission of fostering a fitter and cleaner India, and they continue to be inspiring role models for their peers and the community at large. On the 5th of October, the Department of Biotechnology of Haldia Institute of Technology witnessed a momentous occasion- the inauguration of the Microbiologists Society India HIT student chapter. This event marked the birth of a new chapter in our institution, one dedicated to promoting the knowledge and interest that MBSI represents.
The inaugural ceremony started off with a welcoming song, the Ganesh Vandana, performed by the student members. A sense of enthusiasm and anticipation filled the air as the inaugural ceremony unfolded. It was followed by the felicitation of the dignitaries and esteemed faculty members. The guests of honour comprised Dr. Swapna Chatterjee (National Secretory of MBSI), Dr. Harekrishna Jana (Coordinator of MBSI, VU), Dr. Anindya Biswas (Assistant Professor, Microbiology division, Department of Botany, Visva-Bharati, Santiniketan), Dr. Subrata Mondal (Principal of HIT, Haldia), Dr. Radha Rani Das (Dean of Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology and Food Technology, HIT, Haldia) and Dr. Shamba Chatterjee.
Throughout the event, there were speeches highlighting MBSI's objectives, mission, and the positive impact it aimed to make within the broader community. The distinguished individuals delivered a precise and informative presentation, elucidating numerous facets of the microbiological domain. Dr. A.M Deshmukh (National President of MBSI) and Dr. Bipransh Kumar Tiwary (State President of MBSI, WB) also joined for an online session to further enlighten the students about the roles and aspirations of MBSI. Shortly afterwards, the Poster Presentation Competition, organized by the department, commenced, soon marking the end of the morning session.
After a short break, the next session was set in motion by a lecture presentation by Dr Anindya Biswas. Very shortly after, the results of the Poster Presentation Competition were also announced. Refreshments and networking opportunities allowed attendees to connect and share their excitement for MBSI's future endeavours. The inauguration of MBSI HIT Student Chapter was a significant event that reflected the institution's commitment to fostering knowledge, collaboration, and the pursuit of shared interests among its members.
The inauguration ceremony of the Wall Magazine (JAIBAYON) by the Department of Biotechnology was held on 05/09/2023. It was a momentous occasion that brought together all the students and faculty members. The event was organized by the enthusiastic members of the Biotechnology Department, who left no stone unturned in their quest to unravel the mysteries of space exploration. The day was graced by the presence of Prof. (Dr.) Radha Rani Das (Dean of Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology and Food Technology Department), Dr. Shamba Chatterjee and all our esteemed faculty & staff members.
The wall magazine was unveiled by Prof (Dr.) Radha Rani Das Ma’am who is the dean of Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology and Food Technology Department of Haldia Institute of Technology.
The theme of the wall magazine, “CHANDRAYAAN 3: Bridging the Lunar Frontier", captures the essence of the project undertaken by the Department of Biotechnology.
The wall magazine is a treasure trove of information and artistry. It is adorned with captivating images of the moon's surface, the Chandrayaan 3 spacecraft, various contents and photographs from all the students. The article delves into various facets, including the mission's objectives, the technology used, and its significance in the context of India's space exploration endeavors.
The creation of this wall magazine was a testament to the dedication and teamwork of the Department of Biotechnology. The students and faculty members collaborated tirelessly to research, design and compile the content. They left no stone unturned to ensure that the wall magazine is not only informative but also visually appealing, making it an excellent educational resource for all members.

Carrying ahead with the legacy of the Biotechnology department, this year too hasn't failed to gear up for the day to pay a heartfelt gratitude to our gurus.
On this auspicious occasion the Department of Biotechnology celebrated Teacher's Day with all the glory. The day started with an inaugural song followed by a list of other events which was presented by all the students of the department.
The day was graced by the presence of Prof. (Dr.) Radha Rani Das (Dean of Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology and Food Technology Department of Haldia Institute of Technology), Dr. Shamba Chatterjee and all our esteemed faculty & staff members. The day ended on a good note.
The Govt. of India has launched “Mission LiFE-Lifestyle for Environment” which aims to nudge individuals and communities to practice a lifestyle that is synchronous with nature and does not harm it. The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) is the nodal implementing agency of Mission LiFE. Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) under the purview of MoEFCC is conducting awareness and action activities in different locations under Mission LiFE to take steps towards a mass movement for ‘mindful and deliberate utilization, instead of mindless and destructive consumption’ to protect and preserve the environment.
In this regard on 25th of May, 2023 Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) in association with the Department of Biotechnology, Haldia Institute of Technology, Haldia conducted a public outreach program in the Department of Biotechnology, Hit Haldia.
Eminent members of the Central Pollution Control Board, Regional Directorate Kolkata Sh. Sudhanshu C. Mahapatra, Dr. Sarmistha Saha, Dr. Priti Saha along with faculty members, staff and students of the Department of Biotechnology graced the event with their presence. Oath taking ceremony was performed which was attended by the attendees.
Interactive session was conducted including action and awareness under seven thematic areas of Mission LiFE i.e.
• Energy saving
• Water saving
• Reduced use of single-use plastic
• Sustainable food systems
• Waste reduction (Swachhata actions)
• Adopting healthy lifestyle
• E-waste handling
The event was a great success that provided information about "Mission LiFE" and other environmental aspects the world is facing today.

On 22nd of March 2023, the Department of Biotechnology conducted a workshop on "Meditation as Medicine". The workshop was lead by B.K. Bharati Senior Rajyogi Teacher along with B.K. Asha, Yoga and Value Education, Brahma Kumaris, Haldia. The session gave an insight into physical, mental, spiritual and social health and also how meditation can cure a lot of ailments we face in our day-to-day life. After the eloquent talk session, B.K. Asha shared her experience about how she healed herself through meditation. The dignitaries were felicitated by the HOD, Dr. Suvroma Gupta and all the students were provided with a leaflet for further information. The workshop ended with all the students meditating for a brief time period. It was an enlightening experience for everyone present.
On March 21, 2023, the Department of Biotechnology arranged an interactive session on "Opportunities in Higher Education Abroad" in collaboration with Stratosphere Education. Ms. Sucharita Basu who is the Chief Education Officer of Stratosphere Education spoke about how to look for universities and how to create a good resume and she also introduced the session to the class. The Chief Learning Officer at Stratosphere Education, Ms. Abja Adhikary, discussed the requirements for applying to the colleges and the scholarship programmes they provide. They also highlighted Stratosphere Education's preparatory programmes and career counselling services. Afterwards, there was a time for questions and answers.
In many colleges and institutions, national seminars play a significant role in the academic calendar. The forums offered by these seminars give academics, researchers, and scholars a place to meet and exchange views on their work as well as other pertinent topics. The Department of Biotechnology recently conducted a national seminar on New Horizons in Biotechnology on 16th and 17th of March, 2023 in collaboration with Chemical Society of India, India Photobiology Society and Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC).
From a multitude of prominent institutions, many eminent people were invited to impart their knowledge in their fields of specialisation. Mr. Anupam Aash, Senior Quality Control Officer, IOC Haldia, gave a technical presentation to start off the first day of the seminar. He was followed by Prof. Atin Kumar Mandal from the Bose Institute and Associate Prof. Bhaswati Pandit from NIBMG, Kalyani. The technical session discussed a wide range of subjects of current knowledge and interest, including the application of biotechnology to the petroleum industry and the function of molecular chaperons in proteostasis. The first half of the session was concluded by poster presentation from students from different colleges. The first half was chaired by Prof(Dr.) Radha Das Dean of school of Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology and Food Technology and Co Chaired by Prof(Dr.) Suvroma Gupta, Head of the Department of Biotechnology.
Following a brief intermission, the event's felicitation ceremony commenced with the graceful presence of the Chairman, Principal, and honorary dignitaries. The felicitation ceremony started by embracing all the esteemed personalities including our honorable Chairman Prof (Dr.) Lakshman Chandra Seth followed by lighting of the lamp and a beautiful performance by the students of the Biotechnology department. The second half of the session finally began by a powerful speech from the chairman himself. The honourable people from prestigious organisations like The Photobiology Society of Kolkata and CSIR showered upon us their own insightful and motivating words. The event came to an end with a lively and engaging session in which the dignitaries presented their technical papers, which was followed by the display of the best technical posters made by the students in the Food and Biotechnology departments. With this, the first day of the seminar came to an end.
The Day 2 of the national seminar was flagged off by the poster presentation by the first year Biotechnology students. After that, a technical session featuring notable speakers including Prof. Abhrajyoti Ghosh and Dr. Anupama Ghosh from the Bose Institute, Mr. Samrat Ganguly from IP Counsel, and Prof. Chittaranjan Sinha from the Indian Photobiology Society was held. The speakers provided a thorough explanation of the heat shock protein Hsp12 as well as information on the use of cutting-edge spectroscopic instruments and the significance of patents in the biotechnology industry. After lunch, the discussion session proceeded with Mr. Abhijit Ghorai, an alumnus of HIT from Cognizant Life Sciences, providing an overview of pharmaceutical product development and characterization. Prof. Debashish De from MAKAUT provided a briefing on the Internet of Bio Things. An oral presentation by a few research scholars and professors from various departments brought the session to a close.
The two-day event was successfully concluded after a special thank you from the department to the students for their outstanding support during the event and a vote of thanks by Prof (Dr.) Swati Maiti.
In conclusion, attending national seminars is a fantastic approach to increase one's knowledge and comprehension of a specific subject. They offer a venue for academics, researchers, and researchers to interact and exchange knowledge.
