Wash hair sparingly with a good-quality shampoo.

Many people insist that washing hair too often can leave hair dried out, leeched of its natural oils, and damage your hair. Shoot to shampoo your hair at most every other day. Some people wash their hair only twice a week.

-Try shampoos that do not contain sulfates or parabens. Sulfates are the chemicals that make shampoos lather up. Parabens are preservatives that cause irritation and eye problems after prolonged use. Both of these chemicals aren't healthy for you or the environment so try to use shampoos with natural cleansers.

-Choose a shampoo that suits your hair type. Don't just go for any old shampoo; go for the shampoo that works for you!

-Curly or coarse hair probably wants frizz-minimizing and softening shampoo.

-Straight or oily hair probably wants a gentle shampoo designed for daily washing.

-Colored or treated hair probably needs a shampoo that's fortified with extracts or amino acids, because treating your hair is essentially damaging it.

-Dry hair probably needs shampoos with glycerin and collagen to help restore some moisture into the hair.

When the weather changes, so should your beauty routine. Your hair and skin respond differently to cooler temperatures, so with winter coming up, it is important that you adjust your routine accordingly.

The harsh winter elements and colder climates have a harmful, drying effect on skin and hair. But by following these simple tips, it's easy to maintain healthy, glowing hair and skin all year round.

Tips for healthy winter skin

1. Exfoliate

Braving the winter wind and then moving into a heated environment has a major drying effect on the skin. Exfoliating will remove layers of skin, allowing for new skin cells to develop.

Exfoliating with a formula or a loofer in the shower a few times a week will ensure smoother, softer skin.

2. Moisturise

Moisturising with a hydrating lotion is vital for keeping your skin glowing and smooth. In the colder months it's a good idea to switch to heavier moisturising creams. It's also a good time to use lotions which contain ingredients such as green tea, coconut oil, macadamia nut oil, grape seed, melatonin or vitamins C and E.

All of these contain antioxidants which counteract the free-radical damage caused by winter sun.

3. Use a gentle cleanser

In winter it is important to be more selective when choosing a cleanser. Scented, deodorant and anti-bacterial soaps can be extremely harsh and often will strip the skin of essential oils. Mild, soap-free products and cleansers such as Cetaphil are recommended as appropriate choices.

Basic winter hair care includes using a shampoo that won't strip your hair of moisture. It is also important in the colder months to cut down on frequent washing, as it will dry out the scalp and hair more easily.

2. Use a deeper conditioner

Richer conditioners and leave-ins allow for more protection, as the cold weather tends to dry out your locks.

The heavy cream consistency provides lubrication which will prevent damage. This will stop the hair becoming too fragile by rebuilding the hair structure which helps it grow and shine.

3. Use a weekly treatment

It is common for hair to experience breakage in the colder weather, so to ensure this doesn't occur, a protein-rich treatment should be used at least once a week.

Hair transplants can fall out.
Follicular units are impossible to dislodge after the first day when the healing mechanisms have set in. In the first 24 hours, follicular units are kept in place by tiny blood clots which are strong enough to withstand most forces but it is important to take it easy during this period.

People will be able to tell that you've had a hair transplant. The principle of transplanting hair as follicular units (which is the most basic natural grouping of hair) allows the transplanted hair to follow the patterns of native hair giving a natural result. Even a soft hair line can be achieved using single follicular unit grafts to blend the area seamlessly.

FUE is better than FUT with the strip technique.

The surgery is scarless.
No surgery is scarless. The recipient sites are generally undetectable but a scar will be present at the donor site with both the FUT with strip technique and FUE. With good surgical technique, most individuals heal with barely perceptible donor scars with either technique.
Transplanted hair requires extra care. In fact, transplanted hair can be treated like normal, and be cut, dyed and styled as you would otherwise.

Hair transplants look 'pluggy'. They used to but, as outlined in point 2, individual follicular units can be transplanted to give a softer natural look.

Any one with hair loss can have a hair transplant.
This is a common misconception. Certain attributes need to be met before hair transplantation is feasible. This includes having a known, stable or predictable pattern of hair loss, availability of enough donor hairs, good skin elasticity and good healing potential. Suitability for hair transplantation can only be assessed after a consultation with a hair restoration surgeon.

Hair from another person can be used. Unfortunately, someone else's hair would be rejected and only hair from the same individual can be used.

The results from a hair transplant are immediate.
It is common for transplanted follicular units to shed hair a month after surgery. The follicular units then enter anagen, such that you should be able to see hair growth in the mirror at about 4 months. The final results of a hair transplant take 12 months to become fully appreciabe.

It is better to have the transplant the younger you are.
Part of performing hair restoration surgery is to predict future loss and to make sure the transplant you have will blend in with this. Otherwise, you could be left isolated areas of transplanted hair in an area that continues to bald which would look odd and unnatural. The future pattern of hair loss is much easier to determine in individuals who are over 30. That said, transplants can and are done in younger individuals but this varies on a case by case basis.

What is FUE?

FUE, or Follicle Unit Extraction is a process of harvesting donor hair that will then be surgically inserted into the recipient areas, where the hair is lacking. The surgeon utilizes a specialized 1 mm in diameter instrument that makes a small circular incision in the scalp around the hair follicle. The follicle is then removed from the scalp, resulting in a small open hole where the follicle was.

This process is different than the traditional FUT, or Follicular Unit Transplant where the donor hair was removed from the scalp in one thin, yet long visible strip. The process can easily take about one to two hours, with full treatment being completed in two days.
