When patients ask about replacing a tooth - the one thing I mention the most is the periodontal ligament

The periodontal ligament which is present when a tooth is retained is involved in reinforcing the need for the alveolar bone. When the tooth is in function the ligament creates tension in the bone and the bone remains present. So if the bone is stable then the periodontal supporting tissues are stable .

With an implant there is no periodontal ligament so there is no maintenance of alveolar bone - the ridge is not compressed like with a denture (because that causes rapid bone loss) but nevertheless there is bone lost slowly over time and this is normal with implants - this can be a problem in some patients with regards to aesthetics and peri-implantitis. Implants are the best replacement we have for natural teeth but the first aim is always to preserve the natural tooth and the periodontal ligament.

The Temporo Mandibular joint (TMJ) is the area where the temporal bone and the condyle of the mandible come together.

To understand how your TMJ causes your neck pain you have to understand the relationship the jaw share with your body. .

For the most part, TMJ dysfunction is driven by dysfunction in one or more of the muscles that keep the joint in place which affects the pressure of the disc. And when it comes to the musculoskeletal system there’s really no such thing as isolation.

This means that a misalignment in your TMJ can easily affect the conditions of other muscles that both respond to and influence the position of that joint and the position of your head neck and upper body.

In this way the muscle tension or weakness and movement dysfunction that starts at the TMJ is transmitted to your neck shoulders upper back and possibly your lower back.

An important question all parents must ask is, at what age can my child start to brush their own teeth? We understand the urge to try and speed up this transition and we get that life is busy and some days it sure would be nice to hand off this part of the routine! Well, the general rule of thumb is, when your child is able to write their own name, they’re probably able to start doing a decent job brushing.
We say decent because most kids haven’t developed the dexterity to brush and floss REALLY well until they’re 8 or 9 years old.
So, what we usually recommend is letting your kids get used to things and brush on their own in the morning, but at night time we encourage parents to get involved and make sure it’s done really well before going to bed.
It’s really important that your children understand the importance of oral health care, so lead by example and brush your teeth everyday twice a day! And floss at least once!
