India has reported many influenza cases with prolonged illness and lingering coughs in the last two months. After battling two years of the COVID pandemic, the rise in flu cases has scared the general public.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said the rise in flu cases is due to the Influenza A subtype H3N2 virus. H3N2 has been in wide circulation for two to three months and causes more hospitalizations than other subtypes, reported NDTV.

Fever usually subsides after three days, but coughs can last up to three weeks, according to the Indian Medical Association (IMA).

"Right now, people start taking antibiotics like Azithromycin and Amoxiclav etc, that too without caring for done and frequency and stop it once start feeling better. This needs to be stopped as it leads to antibiotic resistance." the IMA said.

The IMA said viral cases occur in people aged below 15 and above 50 and cause upper respiratory infections along with fever. The association also asked doctors to prescribe only symptomatic treatment and not antibiotics.

The ICMR has issued dos and don'ts to protect from infection. The dos include regularly washing hands with soap and water, wearing face masks, and avoiding crowded areas. In cases of fever and body ache, the ICMR advises paracetamol. The don'ts include not shaking hands or using other contact-based greetings and not self-medicating.
