Govt says WhatsApp tricking users in India to accept new privacy policy
The Indian govt told a local court that WhatsApp was tricking users to accept the new privacy policy and has asked the court to restrain the instant messaging app from bombarding users with push notifications. The Facebook-owned company, however, has assured the court that the privacy of users is its top priority. The new rules give WA significantly more access to metadata. WA users in India cannot opt-out of accepting the new privacy policy but European users do.
Chrome users soon to be warned by Google for risky downloads.
Google is in the works to launch new safety features along with a new scanning tool for risky downloads. This will be done to safeguard users from phishing attempts. 'Enhanced safe browsing' launched in 2020, will provide additional protection. Google claims, 'Enhanced safe browsing' users are 35% less phished than other users. Last year after the Chrome web store was integrated with Google safe browsing, chrome disabled 81% of extensions to protect users.

They are also working to comply with the new IT rules. The clubhouse has been downloaded over 1mn times in India and over 2.6mn globally. The company is also looking to launch tips and subscriptions in India with no fixed timeline mentioned. The new feature will help creators monetise their content.
Microsoft, ballot makers join hands to allow voters to track vote.
Microsoft's vote tracking system will now be integrated into Hart InterCivic Inc voting machines making them the first company to do so. This program will help people confirm if their vote was cast or not and will add an extra layer of security. Customers across 500 jurisdictions and 17 states will have the final say, whether to adopt the program or not. The voting process remains the same, in the end, voters will get a paper with a QR code that can be used to track their ballot.
Ravi Shankar Prasad says digital media platforms have moral responsibility
Ravi Shankar Prasad, the minister for IT and Telecom has called out social media firms and said that they have a social and moral responsibility towards their users. The minister said that these platforms should deal with issues like viral morphed images of a woman on their platform with sensibility and stop hiding behind technicalities. Prasad has accused them of having 'double standards' as they oppose the rules in India, but follow similar rules in the US.
UNICEF, Ericsson partner to aid India against COVID-19 pandemic
Ericsson has joined hands with UNICEF and has donated $1bn as a contribution to help India fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. The donation will be used to provide critical medical supplies for health facilities and equipment which includes RT-PCR testing machines and Oxygen plants. Ericsson's employees across 95 countries contributed to the cause. UNICEF India, having 13 field offices across the country, has expertise in health, nutrition, and sanitation.

With a new safety section, users can see what data developers collect about them, and also permit additional privacy and security information. Unlike Apple, it won't be a default option. The new update will feature in android 12 devices later this year and be available to lower android versions by 2022.
RIL to pay 5 yrs' salary to families of staff who died of COVID-19
Reliance Industries has announced that it will continue to provide last drawn monthly salary for a period of five years to the families of employees who have died of COVID-19. The company will fund the education of the deceased employees' children till Bachelor's degree. Reliance Foundation also assured payment of 10 lakh to all bereaving families of off-roll staff.
'Suit was for publicity': Juhi Chawla's 5G lawsuit dismissed by Delhi HC, 20 lakh fine imposed
The Delhi High Court on Friday dismissed the lawsuit filed by actor environmentalist Juhi Chawla against the setting up of 5G wireless networks in the country. The Court order said that Chawla abused the process of law. The court imposed a fine of 20 lakhs, according to news agency ANI.
In its order, the Delhi High Court said that "it appears that the suit was for publicity". It said Juhi Chawla circulated the link of the hearing on social media which created disruption thrice. "Delhi Police shall identify the persons and take action against those who created disruption," the court added.
Ola hires former Vedanta executive GR Arun Kumar as group CFO
Ride-hailing app Ola has announced that it has appointed GR Arun Kumar as its new group Chief Financial Officer (CFO). Kumar will also head the finance division of Ola Electric, its electric vehicles vertical. He was the executive director and group CFO at the natural resources firm Vedanta Resources. Kumar has previously worked at Hindustan Unilever.
Apple loses three top executives from self-driving car unit
Apple has lost multiple top managers of its self-driving car division in recent months, Bloomberg reported. Robotics team leader Dave Scott has left Apple to become health care company Hyperfine's CEO. Jaime Waydo, who led autonomous car safety, departed to become Cavnue's CTO. One of the first members of Apple's car project Benjamin Lyon has also left the company.
India has 50,000 startups, 45% of them led by women: Commerce Ministry
As many as 50,000 startups have been recognised by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) to date, Commerce Ministry said. Each state and UT now has at least one startup, with Maharashtra, Karnataka, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh accounting for greatest number of startups. Further, 45% of these startups are led by a woman entrepreneur, it added.

The revenue of the loT market worldwide is expected to grow to $1.1 tril by 2024 with a CAGR of 13%, a new report said. The loT market globally was worth $ 622bn last year and $586 bn in 2019. Enterprise lot generated almost 76% of the total revenue in 2020. IoT devices, due to COVID-19, saw an rise in usage in thermal cameras and sensors in offices. 45% of those surveyed believe loT will play a key role in business development in the next three years.
WhatsApp indulging in anti-user practices, obtaining 'trick consent': Centre to HC
Centre has told Delhi High Court that WhatsApp is indulging in "anti-user practices" by obtaining "trick consent" for its updated privacy policy. Centre said millions of users are bombarded with notifications daily. Centre added that WhatsApp's game plan is to transfer the entire existing user base committed to updated privacy policy before the Personal Data Protection Bill becomes the law.
