Sometimes tooth pain can be so severe that you may think you need a root canal. But did you know that your tooth pain can also indicate a problem that requires a different type of dental treatment?

Do You Need a Root Canal? Common Signs & Symptoms
If you are experiencing one or more of the following symptoms due to dental decay, a cracked or broken tooth, a tooth injury or severe infection, you may need a root canal (endodontic therapy). Contact your dentist right away if:
• You have severe tooth pain – especially when you chew or put any sort of pressure on a certain area of your tooth.
• You notice tender or swollen gums near the painful tooth.
• Your painful tooth appears darker or discoloured.
• You see a tiny bump (sort of like a pimple) on your gums where you are experiencing tooth pain.

Signs You Probably Don’t Need a Root Canal (But Maybe Something Else)

• You experience mild tooth pain when you eat or drink something that is hot or cold. The pain is not prolonged.
• You feel the sharp pain in your tooth when you bite in a certain way.
• Your tooth pain sets in when you eat something sweet and sugary, but the pain goes away quickly.
• You notice that your tooth is only sensitive to touch and that your gums are swollen around this tooth.
• The pain you feel in your tooth is “electric” in nature. It’s sharp and shooting.
• A group of teeth have become painful, but are non-specific. The pain is also worsened when you are working out, walking down sets of stairs or jumping.
• You have pain in your cheeks or increased pain in your mouth in the morning.

In November 2016, Drs. Bale and Doneen published an article in the British Medical Journal describing new evidence linking periodontal disease and heart disease. They showed that bad mouth bacteria that cause periodontal disease not only cause atherosclerosis, but that these bacteria can cause arterial plaque to rupture.
Before your mouth reaches the tipping point in which inflammation, bleeding gums and bone loss are present, the bacterial burden starts building up silently. It is possible to know what your levels of bacteria are — and whether these are good or bad bacteria. Dentists can prevent and treat gingivitis and periodontitis, thereby preventing heart attacks.

Research published in the journal General Dentistry earlier this year reported that 12- to 15-year-olds who ate cheddar cheese had lower acid levels in their mouths than those who ate sugar-free yogurt or drank a glass of milk.
After eating the foods, the adolescents and teens rinsed their mouths with water. The acid, or pH, levels in their mouths were then measured 10, 20 and 30 minutes after rinsing. Those who drank milk or ate yogurt showed no change in their pH levels, but the cheese eaters had a rapid drop at each measurement interval.

Compounds called polyphenols, found in black and green teas, slow the growth of bacteria associated with cavities and gum disease. Researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago found that people who rinsed their mouths with black tea for one minute, 10 times a day, had less plaque buildup on their teeth than people who rinsed their mouths with water. What's more, the size and stickness of their plaque was reduced.

It takes serious chewing to break down foods such as carrots, apples and cucumbers. But all that crunching isn't in vain. Chewing "may disturb dental plaque, and serve as a cleansing mechanism, So instead of remaining in your mouth and settling on teeth, bacteria get cleared away.
