Sparsh Hospice - Center for Palliative Care
A palliative care charitable Trust extending free of cost services to terminally ill. "Death is inevitable and final.
A stage is reached in a cancer patient's life when there is no hope of controlling the disease any further." Hospice care (palliative care) accords dignity to dying and does nothing to hasten or delay death but aims at symptomatic relief. Hospice care ensures that the transition from life to the other world is achieved peacefully. All this care is given free of cost at Sparsh. Donations to Sparsh
Hello compassionate people,
We are back to with our next question on palliative and hospice care. ๐
Question: Palliative care is appropriate for which of the following patients?
A. Patients at the end of life
B. Patients with cancer
C. Patients with serious illness
D. Patients in ICU units
Answer in the comment section ๐
Hospice / Palliative care beyond pain management ๐
Hospice care is more than just pain & symptom management. At Sparsh, we believe in a holistic approach, addressing physical, social, psychological, and spiritual needs. Unfortunately, in India, understanding of care often stops at pain & symptom management.
Empowerment of social workers who play a crucial role, is the need of the day in the true sense of holistic care . To bridge this gap, we partnered with Boston College School of Social Work, US, for a workshop to understand different practices for hospice / palliative care in context of India and US.
Special thanks to Dr. Gautam N. Yadama, Dean, Boston College School of Social Work, for this opportunity and to Dr. Karen Bullock, Louise McMahon Ahearn Endowed Professor, Boston College School of Social Work for sharing her expertise. This collaboration is a step towards building the capacity of social workers dedicated to palliative and hospice care.
Answer for this question: Dame Cicely Saunders
Dame Cicely Saunders is known as the founder of the modern hospice movement, establishing St. Christopher's Hospice in 1967 and transforming end-of-life care with a focus on comprehensive, compassionate care for the terminally ill.

Embracing holistic well-being ๐ธ
At Sparsh, we're dedicated to embrace a holistic approach to patient care. That's why we provide physiotherapy to our beneficiaries, ensuring their well-being is prioritized at every step.
Physiotherapy isn't just about physical rehabilitationโit's about promoting overall well-being. In palliative care, our focus shifts towards providing comfort and relief, making physiotherapy an integral part of the journey.
๐ฟ Let's spread awareness among healthcare professionals about the importance of timely referrals to palliative care and physiotherapy.
Together, we can ensure optimal, patient-centered care every step of the way.
Sunday Musing!
We leave you all with some generous words written by our own Anil, who has peacefully departed with a smile.
He had earlier shared a handwritten note which was nicely framed and gifted to us. It is a very precious gift for all the Sparsh team.
The letter is originally in Telugu (can be read in photo ๐). Therefore, sharing the loosely translated version in English.
He writes,
โThis isn't merely a dwelling or a sacred sanctuary; it's a place where one can learn a century's worth of life's teachings in the briefest span. To me, it's akin to a school, imparting lessons on existence, humanity, and connections. While Mother Teresa's influence was always spoken of, I encountered a similar essence in the twilight of my days.
Like an untainted stream that quiets the tumultuous current, amidst a meadow of blossoms, how many seasons have passed unseen and unappreciated.
To those souls who tenderly cared for me, it felt as though spring had arrived on barren fields. Their nurturing was akin to that of a newborn requiring round-the-clock attention and support, mirroring the care of a mother.
Though I don't belief in God, I beheld a divine presence in each of them. If given the opportunity, I would repay this debt in the heavens above.
SPARSH HOSPICE (Center for Palliative Care) has profoundly altered the trajectory of my thirty years on this earth and the final moments of my journey towards eternity.โ
Humbled!
We are honoured to receive this heartfelt appreciation from Mr. Suresh Chukkapalli, Chairman Emeritus, Phoenix Group, for recognizing Sparsh Hospice's dedicated care and leadership in ensuring comfort for our beneficiaries.
Your kind words inspire us to continue our commitment to compassionate service.
Happy Ram Navami!
May the divine blessings of Lord Ram bring peace, prosperity, and good health to you and your loved ones.
From 1 to 10,000 beneficiaries! ๐
With the vision of alleviating pain and suffering we started with a rented premises of 12-beds and now reaching terminally ill via 82-bedded state-of-art facility, fleet of 6 home care vans and 3 OP clinics.
Each number represents a life touched, a journey supported, and a created. And this all have been done in just 13 years with compassion and dignified manner.
This milestone would not have been achievable without the invaluable contributions of each one of you, who have generously shared your time, resources, energy, and above all, your trust in us.
We thank each one with bottom of our hearts. ๐

Hospice Stories!
*Sarita led a life of relentless dedication, balancing multiple jobs and pursuing education from a young age. Despite her tireless efforts, the dreadful diagnosis of myelofibrosis, a rare blood cancer, brought her world crashing down, with little hope offered by doctors.
Amidst all the struggle, one dream remained constant - a trip to Goa. Despite all plannings and bookings, her health always intervened, leaving the desire unfulfilled.
During a routine visit by our hospice doctor, Sarita expressed her longing wish for a simple drive and the team members took the prompt action to arrange the same for her.
Team took her to a ride to nearby lake, away from the bustling streets of the city. The escape made her share all her feelings, ups and downs, which helped us to address the same.
She discovered solace and found her reflection amid the serene backdrop of the lake, transforming her presence into a radiant akin to the sun.
