A young male from a poor socio-economic background, got a new lease of life after doctors at Arihant Hospital and Research Centre (AHRC), Indore, managed to remove a large tumor from the spine. Dr Pranaw, consultant orthopaedic and Spine surgery at AHRC, said that the patient had presented to him with symptoms of weakness, which had been managed elsewhere unsuccessfully with pain medications. Condition worsened four months ago when he started to have problems in walking, he neglected and managed with medicines. When his problems worsened, he saw a doctor and was advised MRI, which unfortunately showed a tumour in the thoracic
spine. Further studies showed that he was having neurological involvement due to the compression A decision was taken to surgically remove the tumour. A Team led by Dr Pranaw Kumar, spine surgeon at AHRC, performed the surgery meticulously
for 4 hours and managing to remove the complete mass. Dr Kumar said that it was a really challenging case with the tumour adherent to the underlying cord. He added that thanks to the team including, Dr Sumit Khatri, Dr Sandesh Pol, and entire OT team of Arihant Hospital it was very difficult to pull off such a tumour. The tumour otherwise known as menigioma is a slow growing tumour arising
from the covering(dura) around the spinal cord. As Reported in literature it accounts for less than 1% of all primary bone Tumours. The satisfying fact was that the patient didn’t have to splurge lots of money, as the operation was done under the Ayushman scheme. Any such case would otherwise cost anything form 2-3 lacs in a private set up with use of operating microscope and state of the art
technique used in the case where the bone removed to reach the spinal cord was put back using very small plates (Cranioplasty plates). This helps in early recovery and patient can be mobilised early. Disease free eradication without causing permanent damage to the nerves is rare in such cases which may have grave consequences later. What makes this painstaking operation done at AHRC, unique is that the patient was mobilised early and there was no neurological worsening after the procedure owing to the expert and meticulous technique used.
