In Hinduism, Lord Shiva is one of the principal deities, known as the destroyer and transformer in the Trimurti, the Hindu trinity alongside Brahma, the creator, and Vishnu, the preserver. He is often depicted with various objects and symbols associated with his divine attributes and powers. Here are some of the key elements found on Lord Shiva's body:

• Tri-Netra (Third Eye): One of the most iconic features of Shiva is his third eye, which symbolizes wisdom, insight, and the destruction of ignorance. It represents his ability to see beyond the physical world and perceive the truth.

• Chandra (Crescent Moon): Shiva is often depicted wearing a crescent moon on his matted hair. This symbolizes his control over time and the rhythm of the universe. It also represents the cyclic nature of creation and destruction.

• Trishula (Trident): The trident held by Shiva symbolizes his power to destroy evil and ignorance and to uphold the cosmic order (dharma). It also represents the three fundamental aspects of existence: creation, preservation, and destruction.

• Damaru (Drum): Shiva is often depicted holding a small drum known as a damaru. The rhythmic sound produced by the damaru symbolizes the cosmic sound of creation (nada) and the rhythmic cycles of the universe.

• Nāga (Snake): Lord Shiva is often depicted with a snake coiled around his neck or arms. The snake symbolizes his mastery over fear, death, and desires. It also represents the kundalini energy, believed to be the divine energy located at the base of the spine.

• Vibhuti (Ashes): Shiva is often depicted covered in ashes, which symbolize his transcendence of materialism and his renunciation of worldly attachments. The ashes also represent the impermanence of life and the eventual destruction of all physical forms.

• Vyaghra Charma (Tiger Skin): Shiva is sometimes depicted sitting or standing on a tiger skin. This symbolizes his mastery over primal instincts and his ability to control and transcend earthly desires.

• Ganga (River Ganges): The Ganges river is often depicted flowing from the top of Shiva's matted hair. This symbolizes the purification and purifying power of the Ganges, as well as Shiva's role as a source of spiritual cleansing and liberation.

These are some of the key elements commonly associated with Lord Shiva in Hindu iconography, each carrying profound symbolic meanings that reflect aspects of his divine nature and cosmic significance.

“When I go to an art gallery and stand in front of a painting, I don’t want someone telling me what I should be seeing or thinking; I want to feel whatever I feel, see whatever I see, and figure out what I figure out.” - Oprah Winfrey

Contemporary and abstract expressions of landscapes are a captivating genre of art that invites us to appreciate such creative works using landscapes as a medium for self-expression and exploration. Such paintings are not merely representations of nature, but reflections of the artist’s inner world, their emotions, memories, and aspirations. They challenge the conventional notions of national identity and artistic tradition.

It often compells us with a range of feelings, depending on our background, taste, and mood. We thus admire the creativity and skill of artists who have transformed familiar scenes of mountains, lakes, and forests into abstract forms, colors, and textures. Many of us even try to decipher the meanings and messages that the artists have encoded in their works, and relate them to our own experiences and perspectives. It’s like we feel connected with the artists, by sensing their passion, vulnerability, and courage in revealing their personal visions of what they experience and about themselves.

Therefore, always with an open mind and a respectful attitude towards such artists and their works, we delve into appreciating the diversity and richness of contemporary landscapes.

Worshipping our deities is an important part of our festivals that isn’t just limited to our homes but also workplaces - the space where our zeal to make a change in a society unleashes, the roof under which our mind and body functions relentlessly to create value for people, a place where people embark on their individual journeys with a determination to excel and achieve their goals and find their true-selves which define their ultimate purpose as humans such as artists, curators, professors, designers, painters, craftsman, artisans and most importantly, good and humble human beings.

We celebrate the true sense of happiness each year - at this “place for art” - at Kalāneri.

(“Kalā” means “Art” and “Neri” means “place”)

Hope this festival brought new hopes, new energy, new beginnings and a new you.
