Rehabilitation is a methodology based approach where effectiveness of a solution is dependent on application whereas retrofitting is a design + methodology based approach. Retrofitting is commonly employed to increase the seismic resistance and addition of stories in a structure. Success of both depends on sound diagnosis, proper selection of materials and repair techniques. These services receive relatively less attention in comparison to conventional methods of demolition of old and construction of new. However these structural solutions are catching the market seeing the effective economics and quick delivery of desired results. Still wondering why Brick Bat Coba still being specified by engineers and used in construction work?

Sharing some simple basic facts on BBC.

*Brick Bat Coba is neither a waterproofing, nor heat insulation nor for slope:*

*1) BBC for slope:*
In case if slope is not provided on the final RCC flat slab(Even very large) and systematic required drains are provided, what will be the issue w.r.t rain water? Will there be any accumulation of water to the tune of 15000 ltrs/1000 sqft? There can be residual water only due to Undulations.
*BBC load on structure is @ 15000 kg/1000 sq.ft*

So such heavy load of BBC is not seems to be correct choice in such case.

*2)BBC for thermal insulation:*
We came across following information. Hope this will be helpful.

Brick and concrete have the same "R" value. Both are not insulation materials.

"R" values: which is a measure of thermal resistance if a material. The higher the better:

Brick 4" thk - 0.80
Concrete 4" - 0.80
Concrete 8" - 1.11
Mineral wool - 5.5 to 19.11
EPS board 1"- 5.00
PU foam 1" - 6.25
All units in BTU

In all green buildings thermal insulation is a must. BBC is not considered as insulation.

*3) BBC as a waterproofing:*
We are struggling to identify BIS code under CED committee or any other international codes for BBC as a waterproofing. CPWD can not be considered as authority for BBC when it comes to BIS code. A major component viz.. Brick itself absorbs water very fast, how it can contribute to Waterproofing?
Other items in BBC may be contributing to arrests seepage.There is no test methods available to check BBC prior to its application.
There are Long list of queries for BBC to be considered as waterproofing.

Lastly, BBC seems to be exists only in India. Why?
