The U.S. Federal Reserve kept interest rates unchanged last month. However, it projected an increase by year-end, saying the monetary policy will likely be significantly tighter through 2024 to combat inflationary pressures.

Crude Prices Soar on Instability in Middle East After Hamas Attacks Israel

November WTI crude oil (CLX23) on Monday closed up +3.59 (+4.34%), and Nov RBOB gasoline (RBX23) closed up +4.59 (+2.09%).

Nov WTI crude oil and gasoline prices on Monday closed sharply higher. Renewed instability in the Middle East pushed crude prices sharply higher after Hamas militants attacked Israel over the weekend. There are heightened concerns that the conflict may widen and disrupt crude oil supplies from the Middle East. The U.S. sent a group of warships to the eastern Mediterranean. The Wall Street Journal reported that Iranian security officials helped Hamas plan Saturday’s surprise attack, which raises the risk there may be retaliation measures against Iran.

Indian indices dipped on Monday amid the escalation of conflict between Israel and Palestine.

Both BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty ended in the red zone due to worries the Israel-Hamas war would further deteriorate the global economy. The unrest already caused a surge in crude oil prices due to supply concerns.

At the close, the Sensex fell 483.24 points, or 0.7%, to 65,512.39, while the Nifty slid 141.20 points, or also 0.7%, to 19,512.30.

India Manufacturing Sector Still Strong in September: PMI Report

India's seasonally adjusted S&P Global manufacturing purchasing managers' index (PMI) logged at 57.5 in September, down from 58.6 in August, but still well above the 50-marker that separates growth from contraction, reported S&P Global on Tuesday.

In September, new orders in India's factories cooled slightly, but were still "historically strong," said S&P Global in its monthly survey results. "Where an expansion in sales was reported, survey participants cited favorable demand trends, positive market dynamics and fruitful advertising," said the business information service.

Growth in new export orders softened from August's nine-month high but were still rising. "Firms noted new business gains from clients in Asia, Europe, North America and the Middle East," added S&P Global.

India's factory managers enjoyed a cooling of input costs in September from August, noting that copper, electronic components, food, and ferrous metal prices had risen, but bills for aluminum and oil had declined.
