Advisory on food packaging- An investigation by FSSAI has revealed that food items wrapped in newspaper/ packaging made from recycled paper is harmful.

In an advisory, FSSAI warns “Wrapping food in newspapers is an unhealthy practice and the consumption of such food is injurious to health, even if the food has been cooked hygienically. Printing inks may also contain harmful colours, pigments, binders, additives, and preservatives. Besides chemical contaminants, presence of pathogenic micro-organisms in used newspapers also poses potential risk to human health”.

The advisory also warns against food packaged in paper/cardboard boxes made of recycled paper which may be contaminated with harmful chemicals like phthalate which can cause digestive problems and also lead to severe toxicity.
"Older people, teenagers, children and people with compromised vital organs and immune systems are at a greater risk of acquiring cancer-related health complications, if they are exposed to food packed in such material," the advisory warned.

The Midday Meal Scheme is the largest of its kind in the world, serving 120,000,000 children in over 1,265,000 schools and Education Guarantee Scheme centres. TURNAROUND The amount of time necessary to get results on tests from independent labs depends to a large extent on the area in which the labs are involved. Microbiological parameters can take slightly longer TAT as compared to chemical and physical analysis. However, updated technologies have helped to reduce the turnaround time and also the number of samples being analyzed within a particular period of time.

The consequences of a poor choice range from worthless data to the potential staggering costs associated with correction actions based on incorrect data."

Companies preparing a product for testing and certification should make arrangements with a reliable testing laboratory early in the process, so that all procedural issues can be addressed in advance and so both sides are on the same page regarding such issues as timeline and necessary information exchange. "Communication is probably the most important aspect of dealing with an outside certification agency," stated one executive in Appliance Manufacturer.
