A chemical engineer turned heritage advocate, Mr. Chakrabarty transitioned from a corporate career to channel his passion for photography and history into curated walking tours of Kolkata. The devotional melody of "Kanha re Nanda Nandana" transported the audience to the lush greenery of Vrindavan, where Lord Krishna's mesmerizing flute and graceful dance forged an unbreakable bond with the natural world. The workshop had a dual mission: to promote responsible tourism practices and celebrate the rich tapestry of cultural heritage. The event symbolized this commitment by inviting esteemed guests to participate thereafter, in a "watering of the planter" inauguration ceremony, visually representing their dedication to fostering sustainable tourism practices.
Subsequently, the audience had the privilege of listening to the Honorable Vice Chancellor of Amity University Kolkata, Dr. (Prof.) Sanjay Kumar, who set the tone for the workshop with his insightful addresses. The Amity Institute of Travel & Tourism, Amity University Kolkata, hosted a thought-provoking academic workshop on Geo Heritage Tourism on 12th May 2023. The event was dedicated to exploring the untapped potential of geologically rich sites as viable tourist destinations, while keeping in mind the vital importance of preserving and promoting geo heritage sites in India.
The keynote speaker at the event was GM Kapur, Chairman, Chapter Advisory Committee, INTACH (Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage), who highlighted the tremendous significance of geo heritage tourism as a means of promoting sustainable tourism while preserving geological sites of significance. He also spoke about the crucial role that INTACH plays in identifying and preserving such sites across India. His keynote speech was both enlightening and insightful, providing a unique perspective on the value of geo heritage tourism in India.
Balaknath Bhattacharya, Convener, Murshidabad Chapter, INTACH, was another distinguished speaker who presented an engaging talk on the geo heritage sites West Bengal as well as iIndia. He discussed the challenges faced in preserving these sites and the various initiatives taken by INTACH to protect them. His talk was both informative and thought-provoking, shedding light on the challenges and opportunities that come with preserving and promoting India's geo heritage sites.
Satyabrata Guha, Dy Director General (Retired), Geological Survey of India, spoke on the role of geology in tourism. He explained how geological formations can be significant tourist attractions. He also emphasized the importance of preserving these sites for future generations. His talk offered a unique perspective on the importance of preserving geological sites and the role they play in promoting tourism.
The workshop concluded with a panel discussion, where the speakers answered questions from the audience. The discussion focused on issues such as the need for greater awareness and education on geo heritage tourism, the role of local communities in preserving these sites, and the potential for geo heritage tourism to contribute to the local economy.
