The increasing online presence of children and the unchecked proliferation of Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) are colliding to create alarming online realities.

The Guardian reported, 'figures obtained through freedom of information (FoI) requests to police forces across England, Wales and Northern Ireland show that in some regions the majority of people identified by police as watching or sharing indecent images of children are under 18'. In the article, they name violent po*******hy, grooming, increased online usage among children and social isolation as the main reason.

India is no stranger to the issue of CSAM. In 2022, about 56 lakh suspected instances of CSAM reports were filed from India with NCMEC. The highest in the world.

Combating CSAM online requires consistent efforts in awareness, education and reporting online leading to removing these materials. Awareness should extend beyond merely understanding what constitutes CSAM or its criminal nature. Instead, it should include a more comprehensive dialogue about s*x, effects of consuming po*******hy, and online exploitation.

When MISSING created the Missing Awareness and Safety School Program (MASSp), we set out to begin having this conversation with our young participants. It's important to acknowledge that children are curious by nature. We need to support them in this exploration and help them keep themselves safe. The silence or taboo around any of these topics only benefit those who exploit children.

Addressing the Crisis of Early Pregnancy in West Bengal

1 in 6 pregnant women in West Bengal is not a woman yet but still a teenager.

Teenage pregnancies pose significant challenges, impacting the health of the girls, the well-being of the babies born from such pregnancies, and society at large. The physical toll on the girls is profound, altering their bodies before they complete their growth. Babies born to teenage mothers often face complications like low birth weight.

In Sundarbans, we see the ramifications extend beyond the physical toll. Teenage pregnancy effectively ends the education of young girls. Compounded by pervasive poverty, these girls find themselves shouldering the responsibility of providing for both their children and families.

It's at the confluence of lack of education, and lack of opportunities but a need to survive and provide that make young girls vulnerable to s*x trafficking in the Sundarbans.

MISSING is working on systematically curbing teenage pregnancy. Through our Swadhikaar Youth Group (SYG), community youth leaders raise awareness to prevent this from happening in their own vulnerable communities. This Children's Day they conducted a rally to raise their voice against this issue.

Through our Missing Awareness and Safety School Program (MASSp), we raise awareness around consent, safe s*x and every child's right to complete their education.

We strive for a more empowered and safer future for the girls and women of Sundarbans.

Crafting Empowerment in Sundarbans

When education and access to safe livelihood opportunities remain a dream, s*x trafficking can become the reality.

In Sundarbans where girls aren't allowed to complete their education or find work to sustain themselves or their family, they become vulnerable to s*x trafficking. True empowerment is rooted in the right to work and financial independence. That's why MISSING's anti-trafficking efforts include upskilling women of Sundarbans in tailoring and providing sustainable livelihood opportunities through our Women Empowerment Centers (WECs).

This festive season, the women at the WECs have crafted delightful Christmas themed handicrafts that got them invited to the German Charity Christmas Market in Kolkata. Buyers eagerly and joyfully purchased these items to support the women and the cause.

Our women at the WEC have embraced this opportunity to work, ensuring not only their own safety but also paving the way for a brighter future for their families.

What better way to celebrate Children’s Day than by gifting them freedom and security?

On 14th of November, MISSING organised a Children’s Day program to create awareness on the Prevention of Child Marriage and Online Safety with the Swadhikar Youth Group (SYG) Members. Held at the Bhuvaneshwari Gram Panchayat Office, the event was attended by the Chairperson of the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), Mrs. Mahua Sur Roy who reinforced our message to children and their caregivers. She assured the huge crowds that CWC would protect every child, and their right to education, which she highlighted would erase child marriage. Passion and hope rode high at this Missing event.

MISSING is excited to have participated in ‘Virasat: Mapping Creativity' FICCI's annual conference on policy discourse for the growth and development of the creative economy on 7th November 2023 in Delhi.
Scholars, policy makers, industry professionals, artists, collectors, curators, writers, representatives of government bodies, and corporate houses from across India debated the economic potential of the creative sector, employment opportunities, arts education, intersections of tourism & culture and the role of arts in urban infrastructure development.
Leena Kejriwal - Founder, MISSING Link Trust and internationally awarded social artist, shared her insights on the role of public art and its social and economic impact on a city and its residents, through the example of The Missing Girls Silhouette Art Project created by her.
We thank FICCI for this opportunity to share our cause with the diverse and esteemed panelists and participants. Hope that Social impact art will gain greater prominence in the public art space in India, going forward.
A special thanks to Roy, and Asad Lalljee for the wonderful opportunity and recognising the MISSING Public Art Campaign.
