The CMS College, Kottayam, established by the Church Missionary Society of London in 1817, is the oldest of the institutions for higher education in South India. The college has 14 departments and 47 courses. There are six research centres in the college. PhD research work is conducted in the departments of Botany, Zoology, Physics, Chemistry, English and Commerce. The College is selectecd as a College with Potential for Excellence by the University Grants Commission in 2004. The College was accorded the Five Star Status by the National Assessment and Accrediation Council of India in 1999. About eight acres of the campus is still maintained as an evergreen virgin forest, which is the abode of a large variety of plants and animals. This patch of forest with its rich bio-diversity acts as the lungs of the Kottayam town.
