A modern residence for a nuclear family with a proper box feel built in a narrow plot of 5 cents with a width of just 10 metres. The Checkered screens are what gives character to this house by providing an interesting exterior and at the same time acts as a good shading device and will play with light to create interesting shadow patterns in the interior. The residence is small on paper with a square footage of around 1800 sq.ft but feels big with its double height spaces and well lit interiors.

Stripping away the original finishes would have offered Rose and Mathew a clean slate, but the process would have proved expensive and time-consuming. More importantly, the architects weren’t sure about the structural integrity of the building: breaking too much could impact its underpinning. So followed a decision to keep the old and add anew. To give the shell a clean look, Rose and Mathew whited out the existing cladding and wall details, while maintaining a palette of white and grey for the peripheral elements. These shades not only provided a neutral backdrop for fabric selection but also acted as dark-light counterpoints to one another, helping to create visual interest. “The objective was to rejuvenate this old Kochi warehouse with a contemporary spirit,” shares Mathew.

In downtown Kochi, where old houses and new shops sit shoulder to shoulder and cafes glitter on every street corner, there's something to be said about the storefronts that reserve the view for the inside. Home furnishings and fabric store Instyle is a compelling case in point. Once a storage and display store for a cladding manufacturer and trader, the 2,000-square-foot showroom features a myriad of textures and colours that allude to a past life. “It was a matter of practicality to keep them,” says architect Priya Rose (), co-founder and principal of Kochi-based multidisciplinary collective Workers of Art (), who along with co-founder and fellow principal architect Rahul Mathew (), was tasked with designing the space in a way that honoured the shell and the client’s budget.

The bedroom incorporated a metal-themed furnishing to not make it too busy with the wooden theme by adding wooden elements to the furniture, in addition to the wooden-themed walls. The bold green printed headboard with a gold-tinge frame is a unique solution to contemporary styling. The furnishing used shades of white and grey for a more pleasing look that perfectly complemented the wall theme. The striped white bedspread and bed pillows along with the white quilt comfort and bold grey bed throw ensure more engagement to the bed space. The ceiling to floor height, grey-white pinch-pleat curtain marked a distinctive element of the curved window. The grey chenille and white voile with a floral pattern are a pure mark of class. The green-beige line-patterned floor rug deftly complements the gold, green, and grey furnishing theme.
