7 Ways You Can Prevent Most Spine Disorders!
Many spine problems are caused by our own actions. If we are more careful in our daily lives, then we can reduce the likelihood of spinal pain and reduced mobility of the spine. This World Spine Day (16th October), we can make ourselves more aware of simple things we can all do to prevent spine disorders.
1.Exercise your spine - Like all parts of the body, the spine too needs exercise to perform at its peak. Spine exercises relieve the strain exerted on the spine, ease the muscles surrounding the spinal cord and increase the flexibility of the spine. Some exercises that could do wonders for the spine are- pres-up, back flexion exercise, bridges, the child pose, the camel pose etc. But do not overdo the exercising.
2.Lose weight - Being overweight puts a lot of pressure on your spine. So, it’s time to lose weight. Cardio exercises such as walking, jumping rope, jogging can help you lose a lot of weight in a short time. Eat fibres, protein, complex carbohydrates, fruits, green vegetables, lentils and legumes to manage your weight.
3.Quit smoking - Smoking shrinks blood vessels and limits the supply of blood to the spine. The spinal discs do not receive enough oxygen and nutrients and this could trigger spine conditions.
4.Be mindful about your sleeping position - If you are already enduring back pain, it might be time to alter your sleep posture. People who like to sleep on their back should place a pillow under their knees and another under the lower back. People who sleep on their side should draw their knees slightly towards their chest mimicking the foetal position. Moreover, purchase a relatively hard mattress that will provide adequate support to your spine.
5.Correct your posture - If you have to sit for long stretches of time, make sure you have a straight-backed chair. If you do not lean back against a chair, ensure that you are sitting up straight. When you walk, once again make sure your spine is as erect as you can make it. Push the shoulders back, let your chin be parallel to the ground and suck your belly in.
6.Be very careful when you lift weights - Be it at the gym where you lift weights or at home when you lift a load of laundry, be very cautious. Do not bend at the waist to pick up the load. Instead, squat down and then lift yourself with the weight.
7.Wear seatbelts - Car accidents often cause severe spinal injuries that may result in incurable spinal disorders. And you can reduce your chances of suffering a devastating injury simply by wearing a seatbelt. Whether you are driving or a passenger (even if you sit at the back), never forget to fasten the seat belt.
A few simple changes in our lifestyle can protect us from spinal disorders and pain. So let us implement these changes right away!
