Infant Protection Day is celebrated on 7 November. The day aims to celebrate the day to spread awareness about the safety of infants (babies less than one year of age) and protect their lives by taking proper care of infants. It should be made aware that due to the lack of basic health services, lack of awareness, and the increasing burden of the population, there has not been an expected reduction in infant mortality.

In India, the infant mortality rate is higher as compared to other countries due to the lack of health care. 30 out of every 1000 babies born under age of 1 year due to lack of proper knowledge and health care.
The 2 biggest killers are pneumonia and diarrhea among babies and children. Both of these can be tackled by timely identifying them and early treatment.

Infant mortality can be prevented by monitoring 3 pillars of healthy baby namely Infant Nutrition, Growth and development monitoring and Immunization.

It is very important to understand the beneficial role of Breastfeeding and I urge every parent to exclusively breastfeed their babies for 6 months and continue breastfeeding upto 2 years. Complementary feeding should be started in every baby after the age of 6 months as only breastfeeding doesn't provide sufficient nutrients for their physical and mental growth.

Secondly important factors is timely Immunization of every baby. The Vaccines are against certain life threating diseases and by getting your baby vaccinated you protect them from some deadly diseases. A babies needs to be vaccinated 7 times in their 1st year of life at Birth, 6weeks, 10 weeks, 14 weeks, 6 months, 9 months and 1year of age. It advised not to miss any of the immunization visit.

Every time you take your baby for vaccination, baby's growth (weight, length and head circumference) and development is monitored and an early intervention can be done if any parameter is not upto the mark.

The government has announced an effective measure to prevent infant mortality by implementing it. Infants are tomorrow’s citizens, and it is necessary to protect them as they are the future of the world.
