Sushil Kumar to be
India's flag-bearer at
Olympics
New Delhi: Ending days
of speculation, the IOA on
Sunday announced that
wrestler Sushil Kumar, a
bronze medallist at the
Beijing Games, will be the
flagbearer of the Indian
contingent at the
upcoming London
Olympics.
The names of top boxer
Vijender Singh, tennis
legend Leander Paes and
ace shooter Abhinav
Bindra were also doing
the rounds for the
honour.
Vijender, Sushil and
Bindra had all returned
with medals from the last
edition of the Games in
Beijing in 2008.
Indian Olympic Association
(IOA) acting president VK
Malhotra announced that
Sushil will be India's
flagbearer.
Bindra, the country's first
individual gold medallist at
the Olympics, was
reportedly the preferred
candidate of the IOA but
since his 10m air rifle
event is scheduled three
days after the opening
ceremony on July 30, the
shooter wanted to focus
on his preparations.
Similarly, Vijender's
weigh-in is scheduled for
July 28 so it was tough
for him to do the honours.
Paes had led the
contingent in 2000 Sydney
Games and IOA decided
Sushil should do the
honours this time.
Cricket: Hales
hopes 99 can
cement England
T20 place
Alex Hales looked to
have played his way
into England's squad
for their World
Twenty20 title
defence in Sri Lanka in
September after
making a brilliant 99
against the West
Indies on Sunday.
Hales, on his
Nottinghamshire
home ground, thrilled
a sell-out Trent Bridge
with a barnstorming
innings that saw
England to a seven-
wicket win as they
chased down a target
of 173.
Significantly, the 23-
year-old Hales did it in
the opener's spot
vacated by Kevin
Pietersen -- England's
man of the
tournament when
they won the World
Twenty20 in the
Caribbean two years
ago.
Pietersen quit all
white ball
internationals after
the England
management refused
his request to
continue playing
Twenty20s while
opting out of 50-over
one-dayers.
Concerns had been
expressed as to how
England would score
quick runs at the top
of the order in
Pietersen's absence
but the 6ft 5in Hales
did his best to answer
those with a 68-ball
innings featuring four
sixes and six fours.
Hales's score was the
highest by an England
batsman in a
Twenty20
international,
surpassing Eoin
Morgan's 85 not out
against South Africa
in Johannesburg in
2009.
Cricket:

Michael Clarke won
the toss and elected

one-day international
against Ireland at
Stormont, Belfast on
Saturday.
Australia rotated their
bowlers after
Thursday's warm-up
victory over
Leicestershire, with
veteran quick Brett
Lee, Pat Cummins and
Ben Hilfenhaus
replacing James
Pattinson, Clint McKay
and Mitchell Johnson.
George Bailey was
also left out, following
a minor injury, with
Peter Forrest taking
his place.
Ireland gave a debut
to Middlesex seamer
Tim Murtagh, qualified
for the country
through his
grandparents, and
omitted Andrew
White and Max
Sorensen from their
squad of 13.
This fixture, a full
one-day international,
precedes Australia's
five-match one-day
series against England
starting at Lord's on
June 29.
The start of the
match was delayed
by 45 minutes due to
a wet outfield but
there was no
reduction in overs.

Jiracek goal helps
Czechs knock Poland
out
Poland slumped out of
Euro 2012 on Saturday
after losing 1-0 to the
Czech Republic who
reached the quarter-
finals as Group A
winners after a game
in which the co-hosts
will rue a host of early
missed chances.
The Czechs, without
injured captain Tomas
Rosicky, took the lead
in the 72nd minute
when Petr Jiracek took
a pass from Milan
Baros and jinked away
from a defender before
slotting past keeper
Przemyslaw Tyton for
his second goal of the
tournament.
The
Czechs
advance
with
Greece,
who
upset
Russia 1-0 in
Warsaw, and will play
the runners-up of
Group B.
Poland, roared on by
the home crowd and
needing a win to go
through, started the
game at a furious pace
and will regret their
profligacy after missing
several chances to go
ahead.
The Czechs were
fortunate when a
sloppy back pass left
striker Robert
Lewandowski with a
chance but he skewed
his effort off target
under pressure from
Theodor Gebre Selassie.
Clearly missing their
playmaker Rosicky, the
Czechs eventually
settled down after a
nervy opening 15
minutes and began
putting the Polish
defence under pressure
with Vaclav Pilar
providing a threat
down the wing most
of the night.
The Czechs started
the second half
strongly knowing they
needed a goal to book a
quarter-final ticket
with Pilar causing all
sorts of headaches
with his runs at the
defence.
The pressure finally
paid off with Jiracek's
neat finish after a pass
from much-criticised
forward Milan Baros
who played his best
game of the
tournament so far.
Poland frantically
poured forward in
search of an equaliser
to keep their hopes
alive but the Czechs
defended in waves and
held on to advance to
the last eight.
Ex-Indian
runner Pinki
Pramanik
accused of
r**e
An Indian runner who
won a gold medal in
the women's 4x400m
relay at the 2006
Asian Games has
been arrested on r**e
charges levelled by a
woman who claims
the former athlete is
actually a man, Indian
police said on Friday.
Pinki Pramanik was
arrested on Thursday
following the
complaint lodged by
the woman who said
she was the live-in
partner of the
athlete, Subrata
Bandopadhyay, a
deputy commissioner
with West Bengal
police, said.
"In her complaint, the
woman levelled r**e
charges against
Pramanik. She said
they have been living
together for quite a
while," Bandopadhyay
told Reuters by phone.
Police have obtained a
court order for a
medical test to prove
Pramanik's gender,
Bandopadhyay said,
even though the
former athlete is
opposing it.
"I have undergone
numerous tests in my
career as an athlete.
Why should I agree to
more ridiculous
tests?" she was
quoted as saying by
Times of India
newspaper.
Another 2006 Asian
Games medallist,
Santhi Soundarajan,
was stripped of the
women's 800 metres
silver medal after
failing a gender test
and the Athletics
Federation of India
(AFI) is shocked at
the possibility of a
second such
embarrassment.
"It's a tricky situation
now and we are
waiting for an official
report on her medical
test," AFI secretary
C.K. Valson told
Reuters on Friday.
"We can't take any
decision unless we
have the report with
us."
However, Valson was
not sure if Pramanik
risked losing her
medals even if
medical tests went
against her.
"I don't think she can
be stripped of the
medals she won six
years back. A lot of
physical changes can
take place in those six
years," Valson said by
phone.
"We never had any
such complaint
against her when she
was an active athlete
and naturally there
was no question of
subjecting her to a
gender test.
"You can't put an
athlete through
gender test unless
and until another
athlete has accused
her of being a male,"
added the AFI official.

Paes' Olympic berth
assured, Sania's fate
rests on wildcard
NEW DELHI: Tennis ace
Leander Paes assured
himself of a berth in the
London Olympics by
retaining his position in
the top-10 in the latest
ATP doubles rankings,
but Sania Mirza's fate
continued to hang in
balance.
Paes retained his
seventh spot in the
rankings released on
Monday, but Sania slipped
to 12th in the doubles list
of the WTA charts, thus
failing to secure the
top-10 ranking that was
needed to book a London
berth.
Sania would now have to
depend on a wildcard to
get an entry into the
Games. The top-10
rankings in doubles in
both the men and women
categories are eligible for
direct qualification in the
quadrennial event.
Today was the cut-off
date set by the
International Tennis
Federation (ITF) for direct
qualification on the basis
of the rankings. Only
Paes, among the Indians,
was expected to get a
direct entry at the Games.
But who between Rohan
Bopanna (12th) and
Mahesh Bhupathi (14th)
would partner Paes or
whether India would field
two teams during the
Olympics, will be decided
by the All India Tennis
Association (AITA)
selection committee, which
is scheduled to meet on
Friday.
The ITF, on its part, has
set June 21 as the
deadline to confirm the
entry of eligible players
for the Olympics.
AITA will try to get a
wildcard for Sania as she
has failed to make it to
the mega event on merit.
Paraguay's Veronica
Cepede Royg and
Liechenstein's Stephanie
Vogt have already been
offered two of the four
wildcards.
Meanwhile, even as Sania
and Bhupathi's victory at
the French Open mixed
doubles event has made
them the favourite pair to
be fielded in London, Paes
could still be chosen to
team up with the
Hyderabadi girl.
Cricket: Katich
retires from
first-class
game
Australian
batsman Simon
Katich on Tuesday
announced his
retirement from
first-class cricket in
Australia, citing
family reasons.
Katich, 36, is
currently playing
with Hampshire in
the English county
season and is
committed to play
for the Perth
Scorchers in the
Champions League
Twenty20 in
October.
He was axed from
the Australian
team after the
2010-2011 Ashes
series defeat to
England in Australia
and was stripped
of the New South
Wales captaincy
last year in the
Sheffield Shield
competition.
Katich released a
statement through
Cricket Australia
citing his family as
the main reason
for his retirement.
"With a young
family and a desire
for an extended
time at home,
Simon has decided
it is time to
reassess his
priorities," CA said.
Katich, a left-
handed top-order
batsman, played 56
Tests from 2001
to his last
appearance against
England in Adelaide
in December 2010.
His demotion from
the Test team
was highly
controversial and
his tense
relationship with
Australian skipper
Michael Clarke was
played out heavily
in the media.
Katich scored 4,188
runs in Tests at an
average of 45.03
with 10 centuries.
He made 44 one-
day international
appearances for
1,324 runs at 35.78.
He began his
Sheffield Shield
career with
Western Australia
but joined New
South Wales in the
2002-03 season
and went on to
score 8,807 runs
for both states at
55.39 with 26
centuries.
"Simon's
contribution to
New South Wales
cricket was quite
simply
outstanding,"
Cricket New South
Wales chairman
Harry Harinath said.
"Not only was he a
superb batsman,
with a state and
international record
to rival the best,
but he was a
brilliant leader who
was respected by
all who played with
him," he said.
Afridi helps Pakistan draw
series with Sri Lanka
HAMBANTOTA -
Pakistan's flamboyant all-
rounder Shahid Afridi celebrated
his 50th appearance in
Twenty20 internationals with a
half century to lead his side to a
23-run victory over Sri Lanka on
Sunday.
Afridi scored 52 off 33 balls to
rescue Pakistan and allow them
to post a total of 122 before
taking two wickets for 17 runs
as Sri Lanka were dismissed for
99.
The series ended 1-1.
Afridi struck five fours and a six
after his side had been reduced
to 41 for four halfway through
their overs.
Pakistan won the toss but their
top order fumbled against Sri
Lanka's new ball attack led by
Nuwan Kulasekara.
Afridi and Shoaib Malik (27)
stabilised the batting with a 68-
run partnership that gave the
Pakistan bowlers something to
bowl at.
Sri Lanka lost wickets at regular
intervals and although five
batsmen reached double figures
none of them were able to stay
around long enough.
Pakistan captain Mohammad
Hafeez used his bowlers
intelligently with Mohammad
Sami and Yasir Arafat sharing six
wickets between them.
Sri Lanka rested captain Mahela
Jayawardene and fast bowler
Lasith Malinga for this match
while Pakistan left out
experienced seamer Umar Gul.
The teams now move to
Pallakele in Kandy for the first of
five one-day internationals
starting on June 7.

Cricket: Barath and Bravo
battle back for Windies
Adrian Barath and Darren Bravo
both made fifties against
Leicestershire as they rescued
the West Indies from yet another
top-order collapse on their tour
of England.
The West Indies are already 2-0
down in the three-match Test
series heading into next week's
climax at Edgbaston, with their
top order having repeatedly
slumped during the series.
It looked like the tourists were
set to suffer yet more
embarrassment when the
struggling Kieran Powell and
Kirk Edwards both fell in the
same over at Grace Road on
Saturday from seamer Nadeem
Malik to leave West Indies 25 for
two.
However, a third-wicket stand of
111 between opener Barath (53
not out) and Bravo (66) helped
propel their side to 150 for
three at the close of the first day
of this two-day match.
Edwards, West Indies' acting
captain, opted to bat after
winning the toss.
Powell had managed just nine
when he was caught behind by
Ned Eckersley off Malik's first
ball.
And three balls later Edwards
was lbw for nought.
It was the West Indies vice-
captain's fourth duck in eight
innings on a tour in which he
has managed a total of only 20
runs with a top score of eight.
But Barath, who has looked the
most promising member of a
weak top four, got the tourists
going again with his favoured
cover-drive and Bravo followed
suit to bring up the West Indies'
100 off Malik.
Rain then stopped play for over
an hour but the break appeared
to have little effect on Bravo's
timing, the left-hander taking
two fours off Malik to complete
an 83-ball fifty with eight
boundaries.
Bravo's six off spinner James
Sykes saw the third-wicket duo
to a century stand before he
was bowled by left-arm seamer
Rob Taylor going for another
attacking shot.
Barath's fifty took 136 balls, but
was no less valuable for that,
before bad light ended play for
the day with Assad Fudadin
seven not out.
Cricket: Australia in strike
threat - reports
Australia's cricketers may go on
strike ahead of next month's
one-day tour of England over
performance-related pay issues,
reports said on Saturday.
Australian Cricketers Association
(ACA) head Paul Marsh said there
were contingency plans should a
resolution not be agreed with
Cricket Australia before July 1.
The Australian newspaper said
players have examined a boycott
of next month's one-day tour of
England or the Twenty20 World
Cup in Sri Lanka in September-
October.
"Relationships between players
and management are heated
and threatening to become as
ugly as the stand-off
surrounding the first player
contract negotiations during
Mark Taylor's captaincy
(1994-1999)," the newspaper
said.
"Cricket Australia is playing
hardball in negotiations and has
frozen all state and Big Bash
(domestic T20) contract talks
under the threat of a AusUSD
50,000 (USD 48,400) fine until
the new agreement is in place."
The newspaper said players and
state administrators have both
raised the possibility of a
boycott of next month's tour to
England.
Marsh told the newspaper his
members were preparing for
the possibility of an industrial
stand-off if there was no
contract in place before the
current one ends.
"There's only 29 days of
negotiations left to run, so of
course we are preparing for the
eventuality of not having a deal
in place before the end of July,"
Marsh told The Australian.
"We are looking at all of our
different options."
The players and Cricket Australia
were progressing towards an
agreement on a controversial
shift to performance-based pay
when CA tabled a demand to
change the definition of cricket
revenue, it said.
"The association considers that
a AusUSD 30 million cash grab
and there is frustration that the
bid was tabled late in
negotiations," The Australian
said.
"The players argue they are not
asking for more money, but
want to ensure they do not
receive less at a time when the
game is in reasonable financial
health."
The main sticking point in the
negotiations has been the move
to adjust the players' revenue
share according to performance,
it said.
"At the moment the players
receive 26 percent of all cricket
income but that would move to
a sliding scale under a new
deal," the newspaper said.
"The pot from which the
percentage is taken would
shrink under the proposals."
Australia are scheduled to play
England in five ODIs from June
29-July 10.
