Sandip University Premium League 2023 Season-3: Youth Cricket Club Emerges Victorious

Sijoul, Madhubani: In a thrilling finale of the Sandip University Premium League 2023 Season-3, the cricketing passion reached its zenith as Thunder XI, Sandip University, Sijoul clashed with Youth Cricket Club, Sandip University, Sijaul. Ultimately, Youth Cricket Club emerged as the champions of the Premium League 2023.
The final match witnessed an outstanding performance by Aman Kumar, who was awarded the "Man of the Match" title, while Raju Raj grabbed the title of "Man of the Series" of the tournament.
A total of four teams participated in this league named B2 Super Kings, Titan XI, Thunder XI, and Youth Cricket Club. The event was graced by Dr. B.N. Tripathi, the Dean Academics, as the chief guest, and Mr. Dharmesh Thakur, Deputy Registrar-in-charge of Sandip University, as the special guest.

This Premium League was organised by Dr. Jyotindra Kr. Pathak, President of Sandip University Club and a dedicated group of university senior students, including Omprakash, Suraj, Sujit, Ayush, Vikas, Sintu, and many others.

Are You a Gandhian?
As an intellectual, I often ponder over different academic and philosophical questions. On the eve of Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary, the question that confronts me this time is, “Am I a Gandhian?”

I am a proud and patriotic Indian and I do acknowledge the immense role Gandhiji played in our nation’s freedom struggle. However, it would be remiss of me to dismiss the question and merely say “Yes, of course” without examining whether my philosophies align with Gandhiji’s.

If you look at the three main pillars of Gandhian philosophy, they are: one, love conquers all; two, immovable tolerance; and three, non-violence in the face of atrocities. At the surface level these principles seem golden. Of course, love can help conquer your adversaries, tolerance is surely a mark of maturity, and non-violence is a great principle to uphold for peace.
But then another thought comes to my mind when faced with this dilemma. What do our epics the Ramayan, the Mahabharat, and the Bhagavad Gita teach us? Would it be fair to equate Shri Ram with Gandhiji? Both were peace-loving, and both gave up various comforts of life in their pursuit of a singular goal. But I believe both of these personalities are vastly different.

Shri Ram had immense love in his heart and mind, but he did not choose to use love against Ravan’s wickedness. Neither did he follow the principle of tolerance when Ravan abducted Sita Maa, nor did he refuse to wage a war against Lanka to free Sita Maa from Ravan’s clutches.
Instead, Shri Ram wielded his weapon and attacked Lanka to destroy Ravan’s evil. He resorted to violence when it came to protecting his wife’s honour, and rightfully so. Hence, Shri Ram was not a Gandhian, precisely.

I also take a lot of inspiration from Subhash Chandra Bose’s ideals regarding the Indian National Army. History is proof that his tactics were just as successful as Gandhiji’s principles when combating the British Raj. Bose revered Gandhiji, but he was not a Gandhian as he believed that we needed to pick up arms to fight our oppressors and drive them from our nation.
While India is a free and sovereign nation now, we have consistently faced threats from our neighbours since independence. For decades, China and Pakistan have threatened India’s territorial integrity, and will continue to do so if we do not take a strong stand against China and Pakistan. We cannot apply Gandhian principles of love, tolerance, and non-violence here if we are to maintain our nation’s territorial integrity.

I believe we must find a middle ground. While love, tolerance, and non-violence are excellent principles to live by, we must balance them out with toughness and firmness whenever necessary. It is not immoral or inappropriate to defend yourself or your loved one’s honour with violence, in case the situation demands it.
Hence, I personally am not a Gandhian by definition. Turning the other cheek is not always the solution. Yes, we must strive to be the bigger person in any given situation, but not at the expense of our dignity. Personally, I believe that as long as we maintain a healthy balance between Gandhian principles and taking a firm stand with regards to self-defence, we can lead a principled and moral life.
