Devise: A Performance Training Project.

A 10 day creation process leading upto a performance on 11th September.
Starting from 1st September, we will be working with 15 students to train and produce a full length contemporary piece.

You will be training with Ritu and Somya for 4 hours everyday, which will include, physical training, a safe space to explore movements that intrigue you, and creating a piece with our direction.

Here's Laila, portrayed by
Laila's father was a professor, and although the entire society disagreed with him, he wanted Laila to become a professor too. He wanted her to go to university, in a time when universities didn't allow women to be admitted.
When Mariam tells her that they live in a man's world and she needs to get used to it, Laila says that she wouldn't.
She fights for Mariam and herself and ultimately gets the freedom she knows she deserves.

Here's Rasheed. Portrayed by .dance
'Men run the world and women give birth. A woman who can't give birth is useless.' This is what Rasheed has believed all his life. When 45 year old Rasheed marries 15 year old Mariam, he feels invincible. And after nearly 10 years, when he digs 18 year old Laila out of an unfortunate accident and marries her, he thinks of himself as a hero. Untill, the two women come together, and do something that enrages him, and leads to his end.

Here's Mariam, portrayed by
Mariam was five when her mother called her a 'harami' for the first time. She taught Mariam that the only thing she needs to learn as a woman is endurance. After her mother killed herself, Mariam, at 15 years of age, was forcefully married to Rasheed, who was 45 at the time.
Mariam has only followed orders her entire life. At first, from her mother, then from Rasheed.
However, her friendship with Laila gives her the strength to do something she never knew she was capable of.

Our first production is about two women finding friendship in the midst of dispair, and how this friendship leads them to Hurriya.
Inspired by Mariam, Laila and Rasheed's characters from Khaled Housseini's 'A Thousand Splendid Suns', the piece showcases emotions of hopelessness, rage, possession, trust, love, and liberty.

Meet our dancer! 'I have been learning, performing and teaching contemporary dance for 10 years.
I started my training under Shiamak Davar for 3 years, then was given a scholarship at The Danceworx, Mumbai for 2 years where I was trained in Ballet, Contemporary and Jazz. I am also trained in Indian semi-classical from my Guru, Punita Hirani.
I am currently continuing my training in contemporary under Eden Pereira. ' - .dance

'I’ve graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Dance and Arts and Festivals Management from De Montfort University, U.K in 2019.
I started off my path in dance as a Bharatanatyam dancer at the age of 6.
Trained and worked under Shiamak Davar for 8 years. Trained in Ballet under Tushna Dallas. I worked with artists such as, Bobby Newberry (music video CHANCE), Aakash Odedra (Samsara production), taught in Pineapple Dance Studios, London, and am currently also working with Absolute Bollywood, London.' -

We are an artistic contemporary dance theatre based in Mumbai. We established ourselves in December 2019 and will be launching our very first piece in March this year!
