The festival Gudi Padwa derives its name from two words — ‘gudi’ which is the flag of Lord Brahma and ‘padwa’ which signifies the first day of the phase of the moon.

This festival signals the onset of the warmer days and the spring season. It is known by various names in different parts of the country, such as Ugadi in Kannada or Naba Barsha in West Bengal.

This festival signifies prosperity and victory and marks the beginning of Hindu Calendar.

Case discussion - A 46 year old male, BMI - 57 kg/sq.m (morbidly obese wt - 130kg, ht approx. 5 ft) presented with neglected varicose veins of long duration which had led to multiple infected non healing ulcers on the leg.
He was advised RFA with foam sclerotherapy and debridement of the ulcer. Patient didn't comply to this treatment as he wasn't keen for surgery.
After a week, he presented in the emergency room with torrential bleed because of rupture of varicose veins in an unstable condition. This is the one of the most dreaded complication of long standing & unattended varicosities.
Bleeding was managed conservatively and above procedures were done next day after stabilizing the patient.
Within 3 weeks all the ulcers healed.

Though varicose veins are long standing and slow progressing, timely intervention can prevent complications like ulcers, discoloration on leg, deep venous thrombosis, rupture and bleeding from veins!
