What is premenstrual syndrome (PMS)?
Many women feel physical or mood changes during the days before menstruation. When these symptoms happen month after month, and they affect a woman’s normal life, they are known as premenstrual syndrome (PMS).
• Common Symptoms of PMS:
- Emotional symptoms include:
- Depression
- Insomnia
- Poor concentration
- Anxiety
- Angry outbursts
• Physical symptoms include
- thirst and appetite changes (food cravings)
- bloating and weight gain
- headache
- aches and abdominal pain
- fatigue
Treatment:
- Lifestyle modifications include regular exercise, avoiding stressful events, and maintaining healthy sleeping habits, especially during the premenstrual period. Increased intake of complex carbohydrates increases the level of tryptophan, a serotonin precursor.
- Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is an approach that emphasizes the correction of unsettled disruptive thoughts, behaviors, and emotions.
- The fruit extract Vitex agnus-castus is the only herbal medicine that is proven to control PMS-associated mood swings and irritability.
- Recent studies of combined oral contraceptives comprising 0.02 mg of ethinyl estradiol and 3 mg of drospirenone (compound hormone pills for 24 days followed by hormone-inactive pills for the last four days) have demonstrated an improvement in PMDD symptoms.
- Selective serotonin receptor inhibitors (SSRIs) can be used as the first-line treatment of PMS with predominantly emotional symptoms.

Insulin Resistance: Antechamber of Diabetes
Insulin Resistance is a condition in which body cannot use, in the right way, the insulin it produces.
When you eat, most of the food you eat is turned into a type of sugar (glucose). This sugar travels in through blood to reach all body cells. Your cells need this sugar to produce energy required for survival.
Insulin is an important hormone, chemical substance produced by body organ known as pancreas. Insulin has the important job of helping sugar move from your blood into your body cells. Inside the cell this sugar is utilised for producing energy.
When you suffer from insulin resistance, the body’s cells stop responding properly to insulin, so it cannot do its job i.e. insulin can not move sugar from blood to inside of cell. Your body can’t get the energy you need because not enough sugar is moving from your blood into your body cells.
When this happens, your body has to make more insulin. Your pancreas produces enough insulin, but your body can't use it properly and your blood sugar levels remain too high. Consistent high sugar levels, over the time, may eventually leads to the prediabetes. Insulin resistance can lead to diabetes over time and also linked to several other health issues.
Common Causes of Insulin Resistance
• Overweight or obesity
• Physical inactivity/ lack of exercise
• Nutritional imbalance/malnutrition
• Aging process (Age (45 years or older)
• Family history of diabetes
• Medications (Steroids, antidepressants, antipsychotics)
• High-sodium diets
• Food high in carbs & sugar (high level sugar intake)
What can I do to prevent insulin resistance?
1) Dietary Intervention: sodium reduction, fat reduction, calorie restriction, and high glycemic index carbohydrate reduction.
2) Weight Reduction: A 7% weight loss reduced the onset of T2D by 58%.
3) Be physically active for 30 minutes or more a day
