𝗜𝗰𝗵𝘁𝗵𝘆𝗼𝗯𝗼𝗱𝗼 𝗻𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿
The parasite of the week is a very small (7-15 μm long) but worldwide occurring unicellular parasitic flagellate from the class of Kinetoplastea, which is called Ichthyobodo necator. It causes the disease known as Ichthyobodosis. Ichthyobodosis affects fish both in their natural habitat as well as in aquaculture, and can be the cause of large numbers of fatalities. Ichthyobodo necator is infectious within a wide temperature range, from +2 °C for carp in ponds to more than +30 °C for fish in tropical aquariums. Ichthyobodo will even stay active and viable at temperatures of +38 °C.
The parasite attacks both the skin and gills of fish. On the body surface of infected fish, a gray-white coating is noticeable caused by excessive mucus secretion. Fish become “depressed”, start to swim and hover near the surface of the water or at the bottom of the aquarium with their fins pressed against their body, making slight oscillatory movements, mainly rocking left and right. Gill damage develops, resulting in respiratory distress. In severe cases, skin necrosis and rejection of the epithelium of the skin can be observed. Ichthyobodo necator feeds directly on epithelial cells by a cytopharyngeal canal that protrudes into the host cell, thus destroying the gill and skin epithelium.
For an accurate determination of Ichthyobodosis, it is recommended to conduct a microscopic examination of skin scrapings or gill samples. Keep in mind that parasites quickly disappear from dead or even dying fish, therefore, it is best to take samples from sick but viable fish. In tissue samples, parasites can be seen moving freely or being attached to epithelial cells. The shape of Ichthyobodo necator resembles a “comma”, they move in a characteristic oscillating and rotating fashion, which enables you to accurately identify the parasite. Once the diagnosis of Ichthyobodosis is confirmed, treatment of your fish should be started immediately, as the sooner the disease is recognized and treated, the greater the chance of success.

Some of you may have witnessed this: there is something attached to your fish and you don't know what it is. Well, it could be an anchor worm! Which is funny, because it actually is not a worm, it is a crustacean.
Anchor worms are also known as Lernaea and can cause quite some damage. Although an anchor worm itself is rarely the main cause of a fish's death, this crustacean can still be responsible for bigger problems by weakening the fish and exposing the fish to other diseases. This can eventually kill the fish.
Anchor worms can be easily treated with eSHa alx. eSHa alx works against parasitic species of Crustacea, such as carp lice, anchor worms, gill lice, etc. Make you sure you read the leaflet carefully and remove shrimp and crayfish before use! You should also be careful with lower animals like corals, anemones, sea urchins, snails, clams et al.

It seems that not only humans have been active during quarantine time, even our discus fish join the babyboom! 😅 Although these 2 discus were initially kept in a quarantine tank for treating some diseases they were suffering from, they have been recovering for the past few weeks. During this period, we have been adding eSHa OPTIMA to the tank on a daily basis, which has surprisingly resulted in the discus laying eggs. What makes this extra special is the fact that we thought these were 2 females 😂

Many aquarists are familiar with algae in their aquarium. Although most types are not harmful to animals and plants, it can be unsightly and ruin your aquarium. It is important to understand what algae are and what you can do against it. We will share a few tips to reduce the chance of getting them and also discuss our own algae treatment: PROTALON 707.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝗴𝗮𝗲

Algae are plant-like organisms that have the ability to photosynthesize. Plant-𝙇𝙄𝙆𝙀, because unlike plants, algae do not have complex structures like roots, stalks or leaves. Their size can vary from microscopic up to 60 metres. There are a wide range of different algae species, like the ones in your aquarium, but ever thought about sea weeds?

Ways to reduce the chance of getting algae in your fish tank:

1. 𝘛𝘰𝘴𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘢𝘯 𝘢𝘭𝘨𝘢𝘦-𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳!

Be aware though, a fish can only do so much.. If you have a severe algae problem, even algae-eaters can't change that. Also be careful with the type of fish you choose. Plecostomus are popular, but most species can grow quite large!

2. 𝘚𝘵𝘰𝘱 𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨!

It is common knowledge, but we can't emphasize this enough: overfeeding causes algae to grow fast. Many algae thrive when there is an abundance of dissolved organics, nitrates and phosphates in the water. All of these are produced in quantity as uneaten food decays.

3. 𝘈𝘷𝘰𝘪𝘥 𝘥𝘪𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘵 𝘴𝘶𝘯𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵!

Should we even discuss this? Like plants, algae grow like crazy when given a good amount of sunlight. Direct sunlight also isn't great for your fish: the bright light, along with the increased temperatures in the tank, can cause stress to your fish.

𝗢𝗵-𝗼𝗵! 𝗜𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝘁𝗼𝗼 𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝗴𝗮𝗲? 𝗗𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗿𝘆!

There are a lot of methods to get rid of algae, but a very easy way is to use PROTALON 707.
