As the summer peaks in the Land of the Nawabs, people gather to praise Lord Hanuman by offering service to others. We are talking about the tradition of celebrating Bada Mangal, a rare example of the Ganga-Jamuna culture that exemplifies the confluence of different beliefs in the Hindi Heartland. It is said that the festival originates from a dream that came to Alia Begum, Queen of Awadh who was desperate to conceive a child and bear a son for her king. The story says that Lord Hanuman came to the Begum in a dream and promised that a son would be born to her if she built a temple in his honour. The situation was dire as if the Begum failed to produce an heir; the British Colonialists were eager to annex the fertile lands of the Kingdom of Awadh, ruled by her husband, Nawab Shujaudaula.Upon waking, the Begum immediately gave orders for the construction of a temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman on the designated site. And lo, behold! Two statues of the Lord were discovered at the construction site. Some legends also say that the The Begum’s prayers were answered, and she gave birth to a son on a Mangal or Tuesday. It is said that her son’s birth coincided with the birth of Lord Hanuman, who was born on a Mangal. There was a full moon that night in chait, the first month of the Hindu calendar.Alia Begum decided to name her son Manlgu after the auspicious mangal when both Hanuman and her son were born, and she participated in prayers held for Hanuman at the newly built temple on the first Tuesday of the high summer month of jyestha. As the years passed, it become a tradition to celebrate all 4 Tuesdays of jyestha (between mid-May to mid-June) as Bada Mangal. Even the soaring temperatures cannot stop devotees from praying to Lord Hanuman. However, the most beautiful aspects of these celebrations are the Bhandara stalls across Lucknow, offering devotees freshly cooked food and refreshing drinks.
